I checked out the new Testament out of curiosity this morning, and though this is one of their better releases (maybe second only to “The Legacy”) it’s still not really my thing. Not too bad though. As far as relatively newer thrash goes I’m more into stuff like the most recent releases by black/thrash titans such as Torr, Destroyer 666, Nocturnal Graves and Desaster.
Acts like Australia’s Vomitor (vicious death/thrash) and Legion of the Damned appeal to me quite a bit as well, even if none of the new school bands can touch a lot of my favourite eighties albums.
I reckon Vektor are pretty great as well, and should appeal especially to the Voivod fans out there.

Fair enough, Dark Roots was my album of the year.

Vektor have amazing sound, great lyrics...but the worst damned vocals I've heard in metal outside of some "deathcore" bands. WHY DID THEY WASTE ALL THAT AWESOME COMPOSITION/SUCH GREAT LYRICS!?

I can't stand pig squeal lyrics or whiney metalcore vocals like BFMV. The current best vocalist for death grunts is Travis Ryan of Cattle Decapitation, their newest album is absolutely barnstorming.

I used to listen to Bullet For My valentine, but All That Remains does everything they did in a far cooler way. Sadly, both bands have become almost unrespectable now.

Most metalcore vocals verge on whining and screaming, which is at best a turn-off.

I can agree with that...although some bands I listen to are called metalcore. Still don't know what it means. I do like Fall Of Ideals era All That Remains and Demon Hunter a lot though...

I have no problem with the shrillness of the vocals, they have a black metal type vibe to them which I think gives the band a bit of an edge. To each their own I guess.

I don't mind the screeching side of black metal, as long as it's not unintelligible. For example, Cradle of Filth aren't a black metal band, but Dani Filth used to sing really shrill screams on Dusk and Her Embrace that it's almost hard to understand. Time has taken it's toll on his vocal chords though, he can barely do his trademark screams.

To me black metal is complete crap....only listenable bands in it are Ihsahn, Dimmu Borgir and Immortal, and even then the productions are fairly muddy and the vocals are awful.

I'd rather listen to black metal vocals than any vocals that scene kiddies get off on.

I notice you enjoy Venom and Bathory, Lexington. Both great artists.
Have you listened to much Hellhammer (a couple members would later form Celtic Frost)?? They were another thrashy first wave bm act who were hugely influential for extreme metal.

I listen to a ton of bm and enjoy most vocals but bands such as Silencer are just ridiculous.

The vocals start around 2:40…

Which bm albums have you listened to SanityTheorist??
Also, which era of Dimmu and Immortal are you referring to? Both bands have changed their style quite a bit over time.

I don't mind Hellhammer, but they did influence a lot of extreme metal. Tom G Warrior will always be remembered for Celtic Frost. Tryptikon is a good project as well, Eparistera Daimones was the best album of 2010.
