It's not really a pastry, though it does contain rye flour. You fry it and serve it with potatoes and lingonberries.

Macarons -
The two main variants are French and Italian macarons. The end result is similar, but the difference is in how the meringue is made.
I've only had the French version so I'd describe it as: A confection that's chewy with a slightly crisp surface. They come in many different flavors with filings such as ganache, jam, buttercream, and clotted cream. Apparently the Italian version is a bit more crumbly.

Something similar: Elephant Ears. They can be large, but I don't think I've seen one that was really as big as an elephant's ear!

Is it possible to include scones in a pastry thread? The ingredients in both scones and pastries share many similarities.

^ Yes, I think someone said scones count as pastries.

When I started this thread, I had a much broader definition of "pastry" in mind than the narrow description I later saw on Wikipedia. You can talk about scones here, for sure! :)

Last night I had a dream I bought a nice looking pastry, but awoke before I could eat it. It looked kind of like the Selma that Wolfram posted, or like this (which is an Icelandic pastry).

I suspect the Semla and the Rjómabollur have a lot of common ancestry. Also, Rjómabollur means "creamball".

Hailing from central Europe is the pastry known as Kugelhopf, or Gugelhupf, or any of at least six other spellings. It has a distinctive shape, like a tall narrow version of a Bundt cake. It's made from a yeast dough with a variety of possible tasty additions or fillings.
