Ordinarily I like any type of music with well written lyrics that makes you feel, but this stuff just has too many bad associations for me. My mother, who was abusive and has untreated mental illness, was obsessed with it, especially The Cure. She'd use it as an escape and take off to follow bands on tour as a sort of groupie and leave me figuring out how to try to take care of my younger brother and deal with my alcoholic father. So, I don't like the genres much, but I do have close to an encyclopedic knowledge of certain bands, regardless, just due to growing up around her. I went through a big alt-country, roots music phase for a while right before I left home and she thought it was purely to rebel against her. Who knows, maybe it was.

I've just discovered a new (well new to me) band. I was aware of their single Work of Art and I've seen James Grant and Chris Thomson play live, but it seems that a load of their early stuff has been released on streaming services and I'm blown away. I think it fits here, a bit new wave and post punk, but quote an interesting collection of songs.

Interesting. I have YouTube Premium and use the YouTube Music app to stream music. It seems that track isn't available on the regular YouTube platform. That sucks!

I'm not the best with genre names but after reading through the comments I realized, yes I do like it.
Especially love the Cure. Robert Smith's voice has always been a calm in a storm for me. It's so soft and yet powerful at the same time. New Order, Talking Heads, and Joy Division are also great. I know there's more I listen too just can't think of at the moment.
Speaking of Robert Smith, he did a collaboration recently with Chvrches that I enjoyed.
