Research has shown that whether or not it is talked about has no influence on people's sexual orientations and so why are "don't say gay" laws for schools being passed in contrary to what the research shows?

Because it's not about reality.
It's about getting ignorant people all riled up at a marginalized group of "others," that some sleezebag politician is blaming for society's problems so that he can get these gullible people to direct their hate towards the group (lgbt people) and their votes towards him for "solving the problem(s)."

It's all just smoke and mirrors BS culture war crap to distract people from things that really matter while capturing their time, attention, and votes.

This is what happens when a country/state intentionally underfunds public education for generations.

I still think it has something to do with the long-term goal of building an electorate that does not know how to identify gaslighting, grooming, and sexual predation among GOP candidates by forcing children to be ignorant about such things -- children who will grow up to believe that "them Republicans is just a buncha Good Old Boys havin' a little fun" when another child or woman reports one of them for sexual assault, and voteonly for the GOP candidates of their choice.
