Georgia shooting suspect’s father gave him AR-15 rifle for Christmas
Quote:
At school Colt Gray was the quiet and mysterious one, the one who was often late to class or absent altogether, the one who rarely engaged with those around him — until he brought in a semi-automatic rifle and shot four of them dead.
At home, he drowned in a family that heaved with dysfunction and violence, ripped apart by his mother’s meth addiction, her crime sprees and claims of domestic abuse against her husband.
The FBI had questioned Gray last year when he made threats online about shooting up a school. His father, who owns hunting rifles, told authorities that his son did not have unsupervised access to them. The FBI said no further action was taken because there was no “probable cause” for an arrest.

“Just check yourself before you speak about a child that never asked to deal with the BS he saw on a daily basis,” the aunt of America’s latest school gunman urged in a social media post, after Wednesday’s mass shooting at Apalachee High in Winder, Georgia. It was America’s 30th mass killing this year.
Annie Polhamus Brown’s appeal for mercy will hold little to no weight in Georgia, a state whose Seven Deadly Sins law, passed in 1995, gives prosecutors the power to prosecute juveniles as adults in the case of the most heinous crimes.
Her nephew will be charged with murder as an adult. Short of an insanity plea, the outcome, if he is convicted, is non-negotiable, and attempts at mitigation hold no sway.
If you’re convicted of malice murder or felony murder in Georgia, the only sentence you can receive is life in prison without parole. Life doesn’t mean 20 years, 30 years; life in Georgia means life,” said Professor Mike Mears, an expert in criminal law at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School.
Under a ruling from the Supreme Court, the death penalty cannot be applied to anyone under the age of 18.
The gunman was described by one former teacher as “a sweet boy”. Donald Trump called him a “sick and deranged monster”. Jud Smith, sheriff of Barrow County, in which the school is located, summarised the shooting as an act of “pure evil”.
Polhamus Brown telephoned the Georgia Bureau of Investigation after hearing the news of her nephew’s rampage. She claimed to have tried to steer a pathway for her nephew and his two siblings after their mother, her sister Marcee Gray, a highly educated engineer who previously held positions with Toyota and Olympic Steel, fell into drug addiction.
“I will NOT disrespect other parents and families that are dealing with this tragedy on the opposite end. They DID NOT DESERVE THIS!! !!…With that said, I WILL NOT leave my nephew standing alone!! !!,” Polhamus Brown said in a Facebook post.
In social media posts, Marcee Gray described herself as a victim of “almost constant domestic abuse” who temporarily left her husband with the children in 2022 but then moved back in with him, claiming that he had been a victim of abuse as a child.
“I made a commitment to the Lord and my husband. No one but me understands the pain that my husband lives with every single day. Every single person in his life has hurt or betrayed him … I truly believe that the Lord sent me to him because no one else was strong enough, to stay by his side through thick and thin,” she wrote on Facebook in November 2022.
Polhamus Brown, recalling a shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, in which 19 children and two teachers died in 2022, stated: “When Uvalde happened, I told my own children that ‘only hurt people hurt people’”.
But the shooting also raised once again America’s long-held political contentions over the regulation of firearms. Barrow County, a rural area east of Atlanta, has a strong hunting and shooting culture.
