Speaking of BM, im listening to the first Immortal atm - sounds just like early Bathory 8)

I have to admit i will use headphones sometimes with certain extreme vocalists so neighbours & passers by wont think 'wtf?'.

I think the originators of harsh vocals often got it right, made them sound compelling and relevant. But its since evolved into something too involved, stereotyped, silly and occasionally plain gratutious. Napalm Death used the DM growl because simply nothing else would make musical sense in that context. Now youve got bands like Arch Enemy playing basically some sort of trad metal, but screeching over the top, its just not necessary imo. Vocals should match the music.

On the other extreme youve got the sqeaky clean vocalists - the first time i heard Candlemass with the messiah singing i couldnt get over how normal it sounded - took a good few spins to get into the melodies, riffs etc, then it all made pefect sense.

Also, i dont like the harsh tones & production used on a lot of modern releases. Nothings improved since the 90s imo. Perhaps im getting old, but a lot of new releases come out sounding samey. If the musics truly hard & heavy you dont NEED endless layers of fuzz & distortion.

Lets see what I have in my mp3 collection

Arch Enemy
Childern of Bodom
Dimmu Borgir
In Flames
Lamb of God
Mastodon
Metallica
Meshuggah
Mudvayne
Opeth
Pantera
Tool

They are all good to varying degrees, but I enjoy Mudvayne, Tool and Meshuggah above all of them. I guess I am a sucker for innovate sort of metal.

I can't get into the newer popular metal groups like System of a Down (you either get or you don't, I don't), and Slipknot.

Drowning Pool is nothing but corporate pop rubbish without the colours.

I posted that a while ago. I don't like them any more now.

I'll post an update of my favourite metal artists.

I've been getting into symphonic metal bands lately thanks to my discovery of a new band, Delain, formed by the original keyboardist for Within Tempation.

Lucidity is a great debut album that combines strong female lead vocals with good symphonic metal. I normally don't like the growly-style death metal vocals, but Delain uses them as a nice counterpoint to the more melodious lead vocals.

Since I've liked this album so much, I've been looking for other bands in the same genre. Dark Moor is pretty good from the few songs I've sampled and seems the closest to Delain. Therion is OK as is Symphony X. Fairyland has a new album out that I like OK, but I'm trying to track down their earlier work that features the lead singer from Dark Moor. I'm looking forward to sampling Within Tempation and Nightwish, two bands which seem to be in the same style.

As you can tell, I like strong female lead vocalists.

I also like Blind Guardian, Iron Maiden, Blue Oyster Cult, Deep Purple, Blackmore's Night (not really metal) and some of Theatre des Vampires.

Quite a few people have mentioned Mastodon. If you like them, check out Pelican and also Gonga.

I love overdriven guitars but I detest dungeons'n'dragons lyrics and cement-mixer vocals. For this reason I've tended towards stoner rock bands like Fu Manchu and Spirit Caravan who are a bit more chilled out lyrically, but still make a lot of noise. Pelican go one stage further by not having a vocalist at all!

Death metal puts images into my head that I would never have thought of myself, and would rather live without. Plus a lot of those acts seem to take themselves SOOOO seriously. Bands like the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, the Melvins and Killing Joke, who playfully twist ideas around rather than simply ramming them down my throat every time, are more interesting and also more challenging in the long run.

My favorite genre of metal is symphonic metal. Nightwish, After Forever, and Epica are my favorite bands.

I hope whoever replaces Tarja Turunen as the vocalist for Nightwish can sing like her. Even better, maybe they'll eventually ask Tarja to rejoin Nightwish. That will never happen, but it would be wonderful if it did.
