Well, my grandmother was a survivor of this:

I was one year old when Chernobyl blew up. My mother recalls giving us potassium iodine and checking everything with Geiger counter my uncle borrowed from his institute.
The vast majority of us turned out healthy - even those who were much closer to the disaster zone.

It shouldn't be ignored. It's not "nothing". But we survive and rebuild again and again.

I wouldn't fare at all. I don't even have a bunker, nor do I have the money, space or knowledge on how to build one. Those survivalists must be filthy rich. So get the cyanide ready. I read that the side effects of cyanide are really unpleasant, but they probably just say that to discourage people using it to commit suicide and it can't be as horrible as having your skin melting, your teeth falling out, and vomiting constantly as your whole body rots from the inside.
