These sorts of topics are OK to be bumped.

I don't consider myself autistic. I feel more like BAP (Broad Autism Phenotype).

"Do you consider yourself Autistic?" Yes, I have a doctor's note that says so.

Oh, when I read about Autism I agree with the doctor's diagnosis.

My Autism severity might be mild but, now that I know what to look for, I know it is there.

Well what got my attention about this topic was people who said they had Asperger's but not autism. Including some who were popular posters at the time.

Those posts were also offensive as f**k in my opinion. If anything like that was said today they would be reported.

Surely anyone diagnosed before 2013 might have been diagnosed as Asperger's Syndrome—rather than as officially being diagnosed as on the Autism Spectrum.

I should hope I do, considering I just spent 1k on a diagnosis from a private practice

I've had two evaluations and both were inconclusive. I didn't tick all the boxes but also had pretty obvious autistic traits. And they were clearly impacting how I live my life and causing me problems. I don't know what to call that. Maybe it doesn't matter whether it has a name. I guess "on the spectrum" is the term I would use.

I consider myself Autistic. I was surprised to discover that my teenage niece considers herself Aspie, not Autistic. Perhaps it's in part that she lives in a conservative area, her family (my sister) has done nothing to educate themselves about the Spectrum, and my niece is still in a structured environment (high school). For some 2e types the problems become significant upon adulting.

It depends. I do consider myself to have autism until I'm with other autistic people and then there is a world of difference between us. Also when I come to WP and I read all about people with autism and I just don't relate.

My T and other psychiatric professionals have also disputed my diagnosis of aspergers as well.

It's quite a complicated set of circumstances really.

I'm actually thinking that my original diagnosis of schizotypal personality disorder was correct now and also my T has suggested that my symptoms are as a result of trauma.

Maybe BAP?

Why would they be reported? There were no personal attacks.

The wording might have changed somewhat but the sentiments are similar.
Aspergers is different than Autism then, there are different "Autisms", "Profound Autism" should be added to the DSM today.

There were a bunch of posts from people that did not think they were really all that autistic. How were they all that different from "imposter syndrome" discussions popular on this site now?

But you two are right in that the posts were reflective of their time. The Aspergers diagnosis had just been "subsumed" the year before so it was a still hot topic. Not that the topic has completely gone away.

The answer to the question. No doubt about my autism then, and no doubt now.

Some comments on that thread seem to me to address the crux of the issue.

Consider that the header title for WP is "Asperger's and Autism Community" and in 2004 when Alex Plank created the site, it seems to me, the target audience was specifically those who had either been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome specifically or who had reason to believe they had it despite not having been diagnosed. And from that thread it seems clear there are some people for whom that diagnosis represented an identity, and the introduction of the DSM-5 denied them that identity. Consider how strongly people feel about identity nowadays! It's no small thing for a lot of people. Some people resented being lumped in with the broader spectrum whereas others feared their diagnosis was no longer valid i.e. they had met the criteria for Asperger's but might not meet the broader criteria for "full-blown" Autism (whether true or not).

I happen to think WP has changed as a result although at the moment I am not up to the challenge of explaining what I mean by that, or defending my reasons. But yes it's definitely a thing.

I was diagnosed with Autism Level 1 under the DSM V when I was 30. I’ve been told that I would’ve been given the diagnosis of AS if that were still a thing.

I prefer autism because I don’t fit in with the Aspie stereotype/caricature TV has promoted. I tend to think of autism as a spectrum, not a collection of distinct, clearly defined diagnoses. We’re all unique individuals with diverse strengths and weaknesses.

In general, I think that things are more inclusive on WP than they were before. There’s less of a hierarchy IMO. Autism is a part of my personal identity.

When you are ready I would be interested in reading how you think WP has changed.

I think members are more tolerant and accepting of those who have different opinions about Autism then they were when you joined. There were more assumptions of nefarious motives back then. The assumption of good motives has led more non binary or nuanced views autism or visa versa.

No, I don't consider myself autistic. I think I'd probably fall under BAP. Generally I consider myself 'vaguely neurodiverse'.
