Yes and as a result, I have now become totally mute. I just cannot talk IRL at all anymore and even typing words on the internet is getting harder each day.

There comes a time when your throat just cannot make words anymore, because nobody hears you, nobody understands, nobody listens, nobody cares, so talking is totally pointless anyway.

Then, your mind makes it so.

I'm always in my own world, especially when I'm around a lot of people and it's overwhelming. I avoid looking around at my surroundings as much as possible, so it startles me if someone says my name or tries to draw my attention in some way. At home I prefer to be left alone.

^Same here. Whenever I read a book or play a video game I get so into it that any outside contact startles me quite a lot.

In many ways I tend to be in my own world whenever I'm watching a movie as, I sometimes feel like the character as well, when I used to play Star Trek Online I actually used to think I was going to crash to the earth whenever I had my character walk right off the ledge or a cliff.

Actually, I just started watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. tv series the first season though, I'm not completely sure what the reference is about when agent coulson speaks of such. In that is he making a reference to a dream-like state or something other.. Oh, thanks I manage to find a nice picture of Mr. Coulson.

If you just started watching:
1) NO spoilers...HAHAHAHAHAHA
2) It does pick up steam. First season is a bit slow, but it does build, culminating in the second Captain America Movie. Second season is much better...

I resent the implication that my world is "little".

Apologies for the bump, I saw a post of mine when I was younger which was wholesome and interesting to see that I still do live a bit in my own "little world", but through my art and music now.

Reality just isn't fun for me, especially right now.

Well, I'm in my own world because (if nothing else) my interests are too specialised for most people to have much interest in. I'm interested in other people as well, but only to a degree. They probably don't quite impinge on me as fully as they might. But I'm not unaware of the world outside my personal interests. And I'm not sure my own world is all that little. There's a lot out there that doesn't get included in it, but I think that's probably true of most people.

Sometimes I literally am in my own little world. It's a safety and survival mechanism
