Why is the saxophone considered cheesy nowadays?

Well since I wanted a femme fatale film noir sound like a sax, but wanted to avoid the sax coming off as cheesy, would a bass duduk give off a femme fatale feel since it kind of sounds like a baritone sax, but perhaps without any cheese that comes with the sax?

Lol no. This reminds me of music used over scenery in British documentaries from the 70s.

I've been watching old documentaries about town planning lately... that's what that sax makes me think of.

Edit: even in 2015 they still used that sound for town planning documentaries because it's such an iconic sound for that type of thing. Granted, this is strings, but similar sound.

sounds rather a LOT like a bass clarinet played with a fat reed.

Oh okay. The bass duduk was the closest instrument I could find to a sultry sax sound.

Well I am looking for samples of the bass sax, but cannot find any good ones to purchase. Does anyone know of any places to buy good ones of that instrument?

you could pitch-shift downwards, baritone sax samples.

Oh okay thanks for the suggestion. I considered that but a lot of times when I change the pitch, it just doesn't sound quite natural like the lower instrument, unless it's just me or if I am doing something wrong?

the bass sax [Low A model] is pitched 5 chromatic steps beneath the a similar extended range bari sax. any good pitch altering program has formant correction which should help with the "unnatural" sound.

Oh okay thanks, I can try to learn more about the pitch shifting. So is the reason why I cannot find good samples of a bass sax, is because the baritone is more popular?

because there is only a 5 chromatic step interval between the two, i am guessing that most opt for just a bari sax.

Oh okay, it's just when I research baritone sax solos, it always sounds noticeably higher, unless musicians are just playing the high notes usually?

Not an expert on this subject.
A saxophone is very integral to a Jazz Band.
The reason why is because a saxophone was an instrument that came the closest to a human voice in its flexibility.
That's all I know on the subject but even at that it is hearsay.

adolphe sax's first creation was the bass saxophone, in a form considerably different from today's iteration, it was much wider bore, much heavier timbre, louder yet. he intended it as a replacement for the bassoon right down to it being pitched one whole tone below the bassoon.

Oh okay thank you very much! The baritone sax in that clip sounded much better.

I was told before that the lower sax in this example is a bass sax, but can a baritone go as low as it?

that was at the borderline between bari and bass range, i could not tell if it was one or the other.

Oh okay thanks. Well from that clip you posted, it sounds like the baritone can be lowered just a little enough that it should work :).
