I always thought that the word "Himalayan" (him-a-lay'-un) sounded kind of stilted.

But then in grad school, a friend of mine from India (the only person I ever knew who was really into functionals) pronounced it as "hi-mah'l-yun" pronounced with the "hi" as in the word "him".

Another word was "Carribean". Growing up, I always heard it it pronounced as "care-a-be/-an" but always thought it should be "kerr-ib'-e-an".
