Supposed to fly out tonight. Was gonna, but decided I'd try going to the local passport office one last time midday today. There were only several people in line outside as they'd dealt with the overnight waiters early AM. They won't give me a rush appointment, but they Did give me a "golden ticket," for an appointment on August 3rd so I'll be able to get my passport in time to travel August 19th. Decided to cancel the trip to the prairies - flights/rental cars/passport appointment etc. Even if I can't get the money back for the flights I'll only be out $200 vs. spending nearly $1000 to go get a passport.

Hopefully by the time my appointment rolls around August 3rd they have their systems and processes dialled in well enough that I'm able to get another appointment to return and pick up the printed passport vs. having to cross my fingers and hope they courier it in time. So far I haven't heard of anyone not getting their passports in time to travel - but many are down to the wire.. <24-48h before flights kind of thing.

Good thing things worked out differently here.. checked my email to cancel flights and rental cars and things and the flight I was supposed to catch tonight had been cancelled and I'd have had no way to get to Edmonton! 8O Was able to get a full $79 refund from that one.

The return flight tmw night was a bit more expensive with a $59 + tax cancellation fee, netting me $27 back - better than nothing! The 2nd flight I'd booked back for Saturday night was $59.. $59 + tax cancellation fee = they wanted me to pay $2.95 to cancel the flight. Ummmmmm, how about no and I just won't show up ? Stupid. I tried to contact them to tell them I won't be there and they can resell the ticket, but there's no way to contact them - just an automated chatbot. Dumb, dumb, dumb - oh well; I'll keep my $2.95, thanks!

Cancelled the Turo rental car with more than 24 hours notice = full $354 refund. Cancelled the Enterprise rent-a-car car just now when they called for confirmation - zero deposit, no penalty - not even for no showing.

All in I lost about $121 - about a tank of gas. Oh well. Slightly more annoying that tonight's flight was cancelled and so this all may have been moot anyways.. either that or I'd have to scramble and pay high prices for flights available ASAP - which would have been more like $400-600+ IF there was even one available tonight. Apparently flights getting delayed/cancelled is a big deal lately.. not enough airline and airport staff. Same for ferries over to Vancouver island/other local islands; not enough trained marine staff. Good thing we're not flying anywhere and are catching a cruise ship in Vancouver and returning back to Vancouver! Only other thing to sort out is how we're getting from the suburbs to the cruise ship terminal in August.. there's at least 11 of us going - maybe more I'm not sure. Plus luggage. Might make sense to book a huge SUV limo, or two, or maybe a party bus ?? to drive us downtown. Cheaper than taxis/ubers when we split the bill 11+ ways.
