From my own diagnosis with Asperger's and the impression I got from the psychologist, I think one very significant and interesting myth is that Asperger's and very high-functioning autism are the same thing.

I think the the true 'Asperger's' (but this is just my opinion/what I learned from one psychologist!) is the condition of those of us who are:

1. Very verbally intelligent; often excellent with writing and words
2. Good with the math and science stuff; less creative
3. NOT visual thinkers

...While high/very high-functioning autism could describe those of us who are:

1. Not as wordy; much more 'right-brain' type intelligence
2. Not as math/sciency, but VERY creative
3. Definitely visual thinkers

Both perhaps share the social issues, repetitive interests to bring order, physical/motor issues, etc., but I think there is a clear distinction.

What do you guys think?

The one that annoys me the most is that all aspies are alike.

yeah the whole lack of imagination/humor in my opinion is ridiculous. my humor is probably what saves my social relationships and allows me to cope with life!

i agree, and may i add, Dustin Hoffman's character in rainman doesn't even portray a person with AS or high functioning autism, he portrays a person with Savant disorder which is a totally different disorder.

In the movie, he is clearly stated to be autistic. There's that one part where Tom Cruise's character says, "He's autistic," and that woman says, "He's artistic?" What you are probably thinking of is that the model for "Rain Man's" behavior in the movie was modeled after Kim Peek, a non-autistic savant.

I'm a big believer that AS is not the same as HFA, and that some cases of AS probably are a form of NVLD and not a form of autism, but I disagree with your description of "true Asperger's." While I'm extremely verbal and love science, I am highly creative and am both an extremely verbal and extremely visual thinker. And I'm one of the AS subset who looks more like NVLD than autism. I also have an NVLD diagnosis based off of neuropsych/IQ testing.

Yeah, this is pretty much why I didn't agree with it either, but I was too lazy to write it.

And you sound a lot like me (with the exception that you're way smarter and a brain scientist :D).

Anyway......

The AS "myth" I hate the most is that people with autism/AS/mental disorders have "magic powers."

Seconded. Someone at a support group I go to, once claimed people with ASD are creative. If we have no imagination, how can we be creative? :?

I think what they mean when they say aspies lack empathy. they mean that they lack a way to show it.

For me, the notions that we lack empathy and are unemotional are the worst. Would that they were true - the pain and trouble it would save!

And then the lack of humour and imagination, and that we're either savants or ret*d (or both).

And then the computer/science/sci-fi stuff. Not me.

Probably when people assume we are overly intelligent and have excellent memories. Also the assumptions that we lack emotions and all have interests that we obsess over.
