I think other people think that I'm "in my own little world", but I pay attention to things much more than they assume I do. My coworkers and family members always are caught off guard by the things that I notice and remember that they didn't think I was paying attention to. It just doesn't seem like I am because I do things like avoid looking at people and I zone out/dissociate a lot.

I get that a lot. I had an art teacher who was always trying to catch me 'not paying attention' because I'd be spaced out. Finally after 4 years she asked me about it and I had to explain that just because I don't appear to be paying attention doesn't mean it's not being processed.
