It's been difficult or impossible tor me to register online for various things without supplying a mobile phone number, and I can't even use my debit card for some transactions because those involving larger sums now require an authorization code, which my bank won't send to a landline. Dreading this practice being adopted by my credit card company as well.

Yes, I got a letter from the USA's IRS that if I didn't verify my identity, they wouldn't send me my refund, even though I had received my refund a couple weeks ago!
