Step one, you say we need to talk He walks, you say sit down, it's just a talk He smiles politely back at you You stare politely right on through Some sort of window to your right As he goes left, and you stay right Between the lines of fear and blame You begin to wonder why you came
Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend Somewhere along in the bitterness And I would have stayed up with you all night Had I known how to save a life
Let him know that you know best 'Cause after all, you do know best Try to slip past his defence Without granting innocence Lay down a list of what is wrong The things you've told him all along And pray to God he hears you And I pray to God he hears you
And where did I go wrong? I lost a friend Somewhere along in the bitterness And I would have stayed up with you all night Had I known how to save a life
As he begins to raise his voice You lower yours and grant him one last choice Drive until you lose the road Or break with the ones you've followed He will do one of two things He will admit to everything Or he'll say he's just not the same And you'll begin to wonder why you came
Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend Somewhere along in the bitterness And I would have stayed up with you all night Had I known how to save a life Where did I go wrong?
I lost a friend Somewhere along in the bitterness And I would have stayed up with you all night Had I known how to save a life How to save a life How to save a life Where did I go wrong?
I lost a friend Somewhere along in the bitterness And I would have stayed up with you all night Had I known how to save a life Where did I go wrong?
I lost a friend Somewhere along in the bitterness And I would have stayed up with you all night Had I known how to save a life How to save a life How to save a life

Not the only song of Leonard Cohen I listen to on repeat. Everybody Knows is brilliant. Ditto for: The Future, You Want it Darker, Hallelujah, and others.

It's dreamy weather we're on You waved your crooked wand Along an icy pond with a frozen moon A murder of silhouette crows I saw And the tears on my face And the skates on the pond They spell Alice
I disappear in your name But you must wait for me Somewhere across the sea There's a wreck of a ship Your hair is like meadow grass on the tide And the raindrops on my window And the ice in my drink Baby all I can think of is Alice
Arithmetic, arithmetock Turn the hands back on the clock How does the ocean rock the boat? How did the razor find my throat? The only strings that hold me here Are tangled up around the pier
And so a secret kiss Brings madness with the bliss And I will think of this When I'm dead in my grave Set me adrift and I'm lost over there And I must be insane To go skating on your name And by tracing it twice I fell through the ice Of Alice
And so a secret kiss Brings madness with the bliss And I will think of this When I'm dead in my grave Set me adrift and I'm lost over there And I must be insane To go skating on your name And by tracing it twice I fell through the ice Of Alice There's only Alice

Since I’ll be performing this on Maundy Thursday, Charles Gounod’s Repentir, aka O divine Redeemer. I’ve been going between renditions by Swedish Tenor Jussi Bjoerling, American Sopranos Renee Fleming and Jessye Norman, and Tenor Anthony Leon (who I predict to be the next great tenor).
I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend You could cut ties with all the lies That you've been living in And if you do not want to see me again I would understand I would understand The angry boy A bit too insane Icing over a secret pain You know you don't belong You're the first to fight You're way too loud You're the flash of light on a burial shroud I know something's wrong Well, everyone I know has got a reason To say Put the past away Wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend You could cut ties with all the lies That you've been living in And if you do not want to see me again I would understand I would understand And well, he's on the table And he's gone to code And I do not think anyone knows What they are doing here And your friends have left you You've been dismissed I never thought it would come to this And I I want you to know Everyone's got to face down the demons Maybe today We can put the past away I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend You could cut ties with all the lies That you've been living in And if you do not want to see me again I would understand I would understand I would understand I would understand I would understand Understand Can you put the past away? I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend I would understand I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend I would understand I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend And I would understand I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend I would understand I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend And I would understand
