Among RPG's Chrono Trigger, the pokemon series and Earthbound reigns supreme.

Earthbound is fairly obscure and sold very poorly in the US despite huge sucess and sequels in Japan. Has anyone here played it?

The character "Ness" featured in all super smash brothers games is the main character in Earthbound.

But more and more I see that RPGs tend to be straying from the norm...either by 'dumbing down' or going off on increasingly far-out tangents in an attempt to carve out their own niche. But with so many trying to be 'different', there isn't anyone left trying to make good games based on the tried and true methods.

Interesting words, but I'm not so sure that a lot of CRPGS ARE that different or original: to me, so many of them are just carbon copies of each other. Their setting and stories are almost always of one of three typical varieties: anime-style (I know it's bad to lump it all together but still), Star Wars-style sci-fi (though I don't really consider it true sci fi most of the time), or Tolkein-style fantasy (usually you must fight rats). The "different and original" RPG's are dead and gone, I think.

Another game I'd recommend is the Call of Cthulhu game. It was on PC and console, but I believe only xbox(maybe ps2 as well). It's first person and relies as much on exploration/research as battle and so forth. It also plays a lot of mind games on you depending on what things you experience and how much your character loses his mind based on that.

Arg, I SO wanted to love that game, but it had sooooooooo many bugs that it was damn near unplayable in the second half--one bug in particular made it impossible to beat the game for some players, myself included. (This bug prevented you from ever successfully getting through the cave while it's falling apart all around you. Seriously, I looked it up on the forums.) And then the developer went under so there was no patch and had to look up the ending on youtube to see it. D:

What I don't like is that some games claim to be a RPG, but in all the good truth, they are a 'insert 200 subtitles of RPG' RPG. I also happen to be peeved that most developers decided to all make Massive Multiplayer Online RPGs. There is a large number of websites you can go to, and chances are, there will be an ad for a MMORPG! There are some good ones, but I cannot recommend any.
Now here are some of the classic RPGs I like:
Secret of Mana: Difficult, but not to hard. If you get killed, you level is too low, end of story. Great Music, and well done for the known capabilities of the SNES at the time. The sequel was also grand, but good luck finding a ROM of it.
The Legend Of Zelda 1: Say? I wonder how many RPGs took elements from this granddaddy and succeeded well?
Final Fantasy 1-6 Every one of them introduced a new something to the world, no matter what the critics say.
Pokémon: Although, in my opinion, the games are targeted for the wrong audience because, the reality is, in order to be a licenced Pokémon trainer, you must be a minimum of age ten. (That and reasons of cognitive strategy and other reasons. ;) )
I will say, that a lot of modern video games just miss the whole thing. Flash and glitz mean nothing if there is no quality all around, no matter what the terms. (Look at what the Halo series did to Microsoft. Bungee studios left them!)
