My vote goes to N64 because it had all the best games- LoZ: Ocarina of Time, LoZ: Majora's Mask, MarioKart 64, Super Mario 64, Star Fox 64, Kirby 64 and the Crystal Shards, Donkey Kong 64, etc. The GameCube and Wii don't have such a large selection of classic games, even though I like Brawl a lot.

Yeah, I know I left Sega out of the poll entirely. I don't remember what all their consoles were called. Just vote "other" and comment.

One cannot defined a best game system of all time, it depends on what you mean by best.

My favourites however:
1. Dreamcast
2. Saturn
3. NES
4. PC Engine
5. Atari VCS (2600)

The PS2 comes first, then the Wii. One of the major reasons: backwards compatability.

It obviously is a question of one's own subjective opinion.

I couldn't decide between NES, Genesis, Dreamcast, etc...then realized none of the consoles I was torn between were on the poll, so I just voted "other".

The SNES is definitely the best.

Close race, but I think the SNES edges out the Dreamcast.

I made my decision based on consoles I have actually owned. I have owned a Sega Master System II, all iterations of Game Boy, a Nintendo 64, a Playstation 1, a Playstation 2, a GameCube, a Nintendo DS, and a Wii. A friend of mine had a SNES, but I never played it enough to get a really good feel for it.

I think it's the Nintendo Wii since it plays games from the other Nintendo consoles including Gamecube discs.

The only problem with PS2 in that respect is that you can't save PS1 games on a PS2 memory card, even though the console will read the disk. You'd have to go and find a PS1 memory card, and I'll be damned if you can find anyone who still sells them.

I ran into this very problem when I borrowed Final Fantasy VII from a friend of mine. I eventually said "screw it", downloaded an emulator from the net, and played the game on my PC. Much better, plus it had an interrupt save feature, which meant I didn't have to rely on stupid FF-style Save Points if I wanted a break.

The PS2 was the greatest gaming console for one simple reason: Popularity. It brought video gaming to the mainstream, which is the best thing that could have happened to my life. I'd been playing video games for as long as I can remember, rocking my parents' old Atari 2600 until I got my first NES. Playing video games was something that was widely seen as 'just for kids' back then, even as the console generations progressed. Until the Sony Playstation came along and teenagers and young adults had games for them. Then the next generation hit and not only drastically increased the number of people playing, but also increased the number and diversity of games. PSX games and PS2 games alike were being dished out by the hundreds for years, expanding the medium to the artistic platform it is today.

The X-box wouldn't have succeeded without the PSX, and most of the PSX games were really made to be played on the PS2, and without the X-Box, there would be no X-Box 360. Also, without the obvious surge in the popularity of games that was brought on by the PS2, Nintendo wouldn't have tried to bring gaming to the casual gamer, and there would be no Wii.

The SNES was an excellent console with many excellent games available, but it didn't change the industry the way Sony did in the '90s. It was really just an upgraded NES.

I do not approve of this thread because you left out PCs. PC gaming came before consoles, and when consoles die PC gaming will remain. When I say PC I don't mean just Windows but the entire spectrum of personal computers including Amiga and Apple II from the 80s.

I put N64, I could go on a huge discusion about all the consoles which I have owned all of the ones for vote except for PS3 and I havent had any SEGA, but I don't feel like it with this cough and the amount of energy I might put into analysing all I have owned. I enjoyed lots of things from N64, platorms of Banjo Kazooie and mario, super smash bros, pokemon snap, pkemon stadium, mario party mario kart, legend of Zelda, pod raceing and Lylat Wars, to me they were some of my greatest times of gaming, also acompaning the Pokemon games one of my bigest interests. While discs became the fad, the N64 were great for my age, and I would trust many kids with with a cartridge over a disc, I think at places where their kids can play at a little game corner N64 have been the best thing.

Sorry, I meant console. Should have been clearer about that.

I think I agree that PC gaming can pretty well thrash most any console, especially with the available emulators allowing a PC to stand-in for consoles.
