My eldest son is five and he doesn't seem to know what dreams are. When he wakes up in the morning I always give him a big kiss and a hug and ask him if he had good dreams but he'll just tell me about the last cartoon or film he watched. One time we'd got home late from a day out so he didn't get his usual half hour of a cartoon or film before bed. The next day when I asked him if he'd had good dreams he said, "I didn't watch anything last night." The weird thing is he knows exactly what bad dreams are. When he wakes crying from a nightmare, he'll tell me all about his bad dream and what happened to him.
I'm thinking he has taken me very literally as when I tried explaining what dreams are, I said it was the pictures and stories you see in your head when you go to asleep. Any help with a good explanation for him? It's not terribly important or a particular worry for us , just wondering if anyone had encountered something similar. I know I understood dreams at his age but then no two aspies are alike. I'm a bit stumped :?

I haven't encountered this one but hopefully someone will have some useful ideas. Don't get discouraged if it takes a while for people to reply - that means they are thinking about it.

My son, 4 1/2, does the exact same thing. He knows what a nightmare is (thankfully he has only had a couple of bad ones), but seems to have no idea what a dream is. I ask him in the morning too, and he also tells me the most recent thing he has seen on TV. I have tried to explain it to him but have so far been at a loss. I was thinking maybe he's just too young to understand, but I really just don't know. Sorry I have no help to offer. I'm also quite interested in hearing any responses.

My husband never remebers his dreams unless they are bad. I've been told this is common and not something you should worry about infact we have a lot of dreams in a night and most of us don't rember the majority of them.

All of the dreams my son has ever told me about have been cartoons or video games, since he was little. Maybe when he tells you about the cartoon, it is actually what he dreamed, and not the last cartoon he saw, he is still little, it could be hard for him to articulate, but i know my son dreams of things like that often, he tells me the dream was about a new video game he created or something similar.

When I was really young, I think I got some dreams mixed up with reality because they were often the same as my every-day life. Maybe he has really normal dreams most of the time and just doesn't realize he wasn't awake at the time. As he experiences more of life, he might start having more creative dreams, and figure it out on his own. *RANDOM SPECULATION*
