I remember something weird from my past.

I'm now 22 years old. This memory is from when I was 4 years old.

Back then (so when I was 4 years old that is) sometimes I had this weird thing: it was as if I "woke up" from an unconcious state. That's what it felt like, but actually it wasn't like that at all because it was while I was standing or busy with something in school (preschool). I kinda "suddenly woke up from some state" and suddenly was really really concious and aware that I was there in a classroom together with the other children, who were all busy having fun and playing and whatever we did in preschool. One more thing I can describe about this is that during such a "strange wake up" I heard a zooming noise in my ears.

Let me repeat once again, that I don't mean I woke up from sleep, as I was actually perfectly concious before it too (or at least so would I look to other people, I don't know how I was myself in my mind) and "woke up" to a more concious state, and heard zooming noise.

Does anyone know what this can mean, and maybe someone else who can describe something similar?

This sounds a lot like episodes I used to have when I was little. I would suddenly jolt into awareness and become hyper-aware of my surroundings an external stimuli. Before this 'waking up', I would have seemed mainly normal, but really I think I was on autopilot. I was tested for epilepsy at the time after I told people about these occurances, but nothing came up. It now looks like what was happening was that during busy times I would just 'shut down' and zone out, but continue on autopilot until my brain had recovered enough to start coping with the external world again, at which point I would 'wake up' as if snapped back into consciousness. However, I'd still be able to function during my switched off state, just on autopilot. I don't know if that's anything like what you're describing, but it reminded me of it. It's something that still happens to me occasionally now, although less since I'll learned how to block/mute/lessen sensory imput so that it doesn't overwhelm me.

I think your description is exactly what I meant. You could indeed say that my brain was on autopilot, and when I became aware again I think I didn't really remember what I did before that. But it's also long ago so my memory of this is really vague.

I never have something like this anymore, it happened only when I was young.

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one with this.

I think so..

It used to happen at school and now at work.

My mind will be in a normal state upon entering work, and halfway through I "wake up" and relise where I am.. if you understand what I mean.

If this is a common phenomenom, is it possible that it could have a name, and that there's information about it somewhere on the internet?

Yeah I get this sometimes too. It's sorta like that scene in Spider-Man when his spider senses kick in and everything goes in uber slow motion.

Mmm...Things of this sort happen to me, but it's not a matter of becoming conscious of the world surrounding me, it consists more in realizing that I am me. I get a feeling of distance, my environment and the thing I'm doing at that moment get meaningless.

I did this as a kid - and still do it now. I think it relates to ADD.

I call it zoning - I zone out, then suddenly snap back, when I zone back in, though whether it's the same thing or not I don't know - I zone out when lost in thought, mainly. Or is that something different? It's just autopilot was mentioned, and when I zone out I am on autopilot - I can complete written questions at school whilst thinking about something completely different, which made me wonder if it was the same thing?

I was the one who first mentioned autopilot, and I've always called it "zoning" too.

I don't think I'd be able to do that, this must be something different. It's not just thinking about something different, it's thinking about nothing while still doing normal tasks, and then "waking up" again, with a slightly dizzy or weird feeling, and seeing the world around you sharper than before.
