Which sad or melancholic songs or melodies do you like?

These are among mine:

The intro melody on ”The new Lassie”
Jon English: ”Six ribbons” (even though it’s a bit annoying that only 5 ribbons are actually mentioned)
Terry Jacks: ”Seasons in the sun”
Peter, Paul and Mary: ”Puff the magic dragon”
Bobby Goldsboro: ”Honey”
The Hollies: ”He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother"

Your Revolution Is A Joke - Funeral For A Friend

Blue American - Placebo

True Romance - Silverstein

These are the first 3 coming to my head, but I'd better not listen to them often.

There are a lot of Irish and Scottish folksongs that fit the bill.

There are several, but at the moment I can only think of the soundtrack of Bladerunner, Dire Straits' Romeo & Juliet, and the sad parts of Mozart's Requiem.

If we're doing classical, I suggest anything by Samuel Barber, arguably one of the last composers in the 20th century to compose in the romantic tradition.

I also like the rock group Muse. And some of their songs are sad. I like their happy songs and their sad songs.

Interesting, I will ask my father if he has any Samuel Barber CDs.

On the subject of the Romantic composers: I like Rachmaninov too. About ten years ago I had clinical depression, and I was alone in my parents' home and put on a CD with some choral music by Rachmaninov. It was so depressingly emotional, though, that I immediately put it off and had to get out of the house. Fortunately my parents live in a community which has a community centre, and there was a social gathering there that evening, and I went to it just so that I wouldn't be alone with my own racing thoughts.

I have an Aspie friend who suffers from depression, who says he can't listen to the Bladerunner music because it just overwhelms him so much emotionally. He said it would be possible for him to put together a playlist that would make him suicidal!

I don't remember whether I mentioned this before, but a scientific study in the USA has shown that there is a higher suicide rate amongst people who listen to country & western music than amongst other sectors of the population.

basically anything by Death Cab for Cutie. it ALL sounds melancholy. The vocalist Ben Gibbard sounds like a troubled soul...
i say this assuming he writes the lyrics himself.
