If we're doing classical, I suggest anything by Samuel Barber, arguably one of the last composers in the 20th century to compose in the romantic tradition.
Interesting, I will ask my father if he has any Samuel Barber CDs.
On the subject of the Romantic composers: I like Rachmaninov too. About ten years ago I had clinical depression, and I was alone in my parents' home and put on a CD with some choral music by Rachmaninov. It was so depressingly emotional, though, that I immediately put it off and had to get out of the house. Fortunately my parents live in a community which has a community centre, and there was a social gathering there that evening, and I went to it just so that I wouldn't be alone with my own racing thoughts.
I have an Aspie friend who suffers from depression, who says he can't listen to the
Bladerunner music because it just overwhelms him so much emotionally. He said it would be possible for him to put together a playlist that would make him suicidal!
I don't remember whether I mentioned this before, but a scientific study in the USA has shown that there is a higher suicide rate amongst people who listen to country & western music than amongst other sectors of the population.
