My dad called and asked how things were going (I'm babysitting my little sisters today) and I rushed through telling him about the day he told me to stop and then I spoke 1 word at a time (which IMO I feel is odd for me) I then started crying since IMO it seemed like he yelled at me. I tend to speak fast for some reason which my parents don't understand so then I speak one word at a time (as if someone's stupid!) I hate IT! Does anyone else do this and how do you change it?

I'm told I speak quickly too.

I had to have speech therapy as I spoke so quickly that I stumbled over my words when I was trying to speak.

I speak more slowly now than I did prior to therapy, but I'm still often told that I speak more quickly than most other people do.

It doesn't bother me though. We all have different ways of speaking. As long as you can make yourself understood, that is the key thing.

But if you are concerned perhaps investigating speech therapy might help.

I talk too fast myself, especially when I have alot to say it just comes out as one very long word. I guess you just have to make lots of effort to slow down, that's what I do anyway, I kind of plan what I'll say so I don't end up rambling. It can get very annoying when people don't have a clue what I'm on about, I also talk quite slurry aswell.

Slow most of the time, but I do go on too fast from time to time.

When I get excited about what I'm talking about, I speed up considerably. It's because my mind is firing off so fast, and I feel I have to get every single detail in for the other person to understand why I so deeply appreciate what it is that I'm talking about.

I think I just exhibited this tendency with that last sentence...

Sometimes I'm told to slow down when talking, usually when I'm excited.

^^ Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaye, I believe I do speak very fast indeed!! ^^ I was very worried concering my diagnosis of High Functioning Autism as I believed that typically humans upon the autistic spectrum speak slowly. ^^ Yaye I feel not so frightened. ^^ Alas, I must say my voice is very high and constricted and I have been referred for speech therapy pixies I believe. ^^ Due to my high speed and voice which may be described as psychogenic, I believe I am very difficult for humans to understand, although I believe this is dependent upon the human. ^^ Interestingly, it appears to be my family who I see not very often who have greatest difficulty with understanding my happy voice, including my Grandfather.

People have told me many times to slow down, but I don't even realise that I'm speaking too fast. And sometimes when I slow down, they say it's still too fast.

Yes, I tend to speak fast as well. And, for me, years of trying to slow down my speaking pace, and I think by extension my thinking pace, has proved to be a very difficult thing to do. Actually, I haven't succeeded yet.

I usually do this when I meet someone for the first time due to shyness/nervousness, but then I settle down after a while.

I think too much when speaking, so it a bit slow.
But I do know a girl with autism and she is chattering my head off, so fast...

Yes, exactly! When people ask me to slow down it's difficult for me to make them understand that I can't. I'm only part time verbal anyway (I experience episodes of involuntary mutism) and although the speech therapy helped a lot, it is still difficult for me to speak and it is so hard for me to get people to realise that I'm doing the best I can!

I totally understand that it must be hard for people to decipher what I'm saying when the words come hurtling out so quickly - but I wish they would get that I'm not doing on purpose and I'm doing my best!

Admittedly, where possible I email ;)
