(intense fear of snakes)

Do any of you have this?

I'm curious because I live in an area well-known for being home to rattlesnakes, and it seems like lots of people here live in abject terror of them. I wonder if having AS increases/decreases the likelihood of having the phobia.

I occasionally see rattlesnakes in the desert near my home. I have a very healthy respect for them, and I sure as hell don't want them in my yard, but I can't say that I have a phobia about them. They're Mother Nature's creatures, just like you or me.

Have any of you been treated for ophidiophobia?

No, not that I know of. I kind of like the look of them, actually.

I don't understand the fear of snakes. From my understanding the only way they'll bite you is if you step on them or threaten them? We have a lot of snakes around here but most are harmless anyway.

I have a reasonable wariness of snakes. I respect them as well as their boundaries.

I don't scream and run in fright, like my mom would. In fact, I would probably stand still and analyze them from a safe distance.

I would never harm a snake, either, except for self-defense. But as long as I am careful and respectful of their boundaries, I shouldn't need to defend myself from them, right?

I don't, but my stepfather does. The kids can't even go near him with a toy one without him getting nervous.

I'm not sure if I'm afraid of them or not, they don't really have them where I live. My mom is really scared of them, but not enough to be a phobia. I used to tease her with fake snakes :P

No fear of snakes. My family had a boa constrictor as a pet when I was a kid, so I had lots of experience with the non-poisonous variety. My father lives on a ranch in SoCal, and occasionally sends photos of rattlers that show up on his property. He has a good zoom lens, so doesn't get anywhere near them.

Note: Between 10 and 20 people die per year of snakebite in the U.S. Whatever danger exists, it is an extremely low probability. You are more likely to be killed in a meteor strike, statistically speaking.

I love snakes. It's so cool when they wrap around your neck or in your hair. I used to work at a park nature center and part of the job was holding the snakes so guests could look at them, pet them. We had a rat snake that would always climb in your hair if you had a high ponytail. Only the park ranger was allowed to touch the poisonous ones though.

I thought they were cute. My mother is terrified of the things, picture the woman on a chair screaming over a mouse... aww my mother is classy.

it sounds to me like most of the people here respect snakes as potentialy deadly animals with no reason to atack, as do I, but does this realy apply only to snakes? for me the same fealing works for any living animal that I don't personaly know (my dogs and the like), is anyone here scared of animals besides snake?

Not as much as I fear spiders but yeah I'm pretty freaked out by snakes.
In one house I lived at there was one in the shed, then under the house and I got paranoid when I walked into bush area with my dog cause I thought I heard one.
And sometimes when I just see a lizards head I think it's a snake. 8O

I honestly can't think of anything that might make us Aspies more afraid of snakes---unless it might be in seeing certain marking patterns on the snake's skin---and watching those patterns creepily twist and turn.

If I see a snake in the wild, like on a walk in the woods, I get scared---but not petrified or anything. But I do feel a sudden hesitation in my walk, and a skip of a heartbeat. But, at the nature center at our state park, you are allowed to handle the snakes in captivity---and that doesn't bother me much at all. When I am holding one of their snakes, I see it as a pet like I would a dog or cat. I am not afraid.

Snakes don't bother me. I have rather more of an Edward Abbey attitude to them than many people... and I'm certainly not Indiana Jones ;)
