Latin is a dead language
dead as dead can be.
It killed off all the Romans
and now it's killing me.

Not very difficult, since a lot of the vocabulary is in common with English. The nouns are declined and have five main cases, nominative (the subject), genitive (like the possessive case. "of the"), dative (the indirect object, or object of a preposition. "to the/for the"), accusative (the direct object of a transitive verb), and ablative (which is mostly the same as the dative case in spelling, but in meaning it is usually the cause of the action or the agent. "by the").

The verbs also are conjugated, as verbs usually are, and their meaning is altered by the attachment of prepositions such as trans- "across", ad- "to", de- "of", ex- "out of/from", et omnia cetera.

To get an idea of Latin might have sounded like, or, at least, what spoken Latin would sound like:

Aurum potestas est! :)

Dulce et decorum est, pro patria mori...

And of course, all the anatomical terms... cranialis, caudalis, superficialis, profundus, gracilis, lateralis, medialis...

And that is probably the extent of my Latin vocabulary - although I warn you, languages are one of my special interests, so I'll be loitering here and reading everything you post to try and learn more!
