I just joined out of interest and the want to discuss topics pertaining AS and other topics with other people who have AS. I have been diagnosed with Aspergers, a mild case, when I was in high school. ( The fact it was diagnosed as mild is the reason why it took a while before a doctor mentioned it.) Unlike a lot of people who have Aspergers, I am very math illiterate and dislike it immensly. My strengths are in history and english and my "narrow field of interest" would be politics and history.

Well those are very cool interests! When you say politics, is this primarily American politics and American history or is it world/specific to a another particular country?

Here is a problem for me. I used to be very interested in politics (and to a certain extent, the bug never really goes away). The problem is, I have wanted to be on a track heading towards a career in elective office, preferably on the national stage. But then I am immediately reminded of my limitations, that politics is about people and relationships primarily and it seems apparent that I don't have those kinds of gifts to have any realistic shot at having a career in politics. I can namedrop any of the United States' 100 Senators and rattle off all kinds of facts and policy, but so what? It is very frustrating and it has stricken me with a lot of grief. At least with other interests and pursuits, you don't have to worry as much about how good of a "mover and shaker" you are.

Of course, many people who go into politics or history do so from a research standpoint. Many will teach, lecture, etc. But I know that's probably not for me either.

Is politics/history more of a hobby for you polthi1818 or do you aspire to make a career out of it?

Make a career out, mostly in teaching. I would like to run for political office but feel that the national stage would be too much for me not because I fear social interactions so much but the fact that I have a paranoid side to me and that there is a lot of stuff that the general public doesn't know about that make the average citzen crap their pants but the politicans in the federal government do. That would be my only limitation and I hope I can work on that. Like you said or at least referenced to, there are many ways in which you yourself could still be involved in politics and that could be with reasearch or office work for politicians in helping them draft bills, research issues in the constinuency (spelling?), etc.
