Hello.. Obviously I'm a new member to the site. I'm here because my 7 year old son was diagnosed with AS (as well as dyslexia).. and apparently it's fairly common that I now realized that I have AS, but it's not been diagnosed by a dr. I have done the online tests, read the 'symptoms' etc, and it all makes complete sense.

I am hoping that being here will give me a better understanding of AS and be able to discuss things with others..

It's been a few weeks since all this happened, so it is still very new. It's interesting that I realize the AS is there in myself, but it really hasn't bothered me as much as it has in the last few weeks. I think that we learn to compensate for things, but now that it's 'real' and there is a name for it I am noticing that I am having more things to deal with now and I've kind of sheltered myself from people. I can't figure out if it's because my son also has it and I'm trying to let it control me more so I can understand it and help him more, or if it's just my mind dealing with the fact that he has it and it seems to be worse them mine.. but still not too severe.

Then with the reading on the internet, books, etc.. basically everything I can find anywhere.. I also second guess myself and wonder if I believe I have AS as a way to explain and deal with the fact that I'm not so great in social situations.. Is it really AS, or am I just a clumsy, awkward, highly intelligent, odd person?

Anyhow.. I guess that's enough to start.. I'd like to talk to as many people as I can to try to figure this out more for my son and to help him, and I guess for me as well.

thanks to everyone!

You should obtain a copy of the book, "The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome" by Dr. Tony Attwood...either through your local library or, if you prefer, purchase a copy for yourself through any bookstore. It is an outstanding book and will provide helpful information for both you and your young son. Oh, and yes, there is a genetic basis to Asperger's Syndrome and it is very possible that you passed the gene onto your son.

Nice meeting you!

howdy pal, this is my first day on the WP forum myself. Pleased to meet you! I have recently discovered that I have aspergers aswell. After 55 years of confusion, my discovery is really of no great surprize. I am amazed though that there are so many of us! This is a relief though to see so many of us gathered here. I am sure that it will be a facinating journey to find out more. I think that my father had it as well and I can see signs of it in my 30 year old daughter too from some private conversations that we had a few years back. I have passed my aspie info off to her in Canada. I think that when the time is right she might take a gander at it all and try to make some sense of it according to how she perceives it. I think that the main thing that we should be concentrating on is how much of an ability aspergers is and not a disability. I want to learn more on how to control my meltdowns, when I get sensory overloads, stuff like that.
Anyhow Chris take er easy pal and the very best of luck with you and your son, I hope that yous find some easy routes to the answers that you are looking for.
Ps. I really like Maine, i use to visit it in the fall when I was residing in Montreal, amazing colors from the leaves on the trees.
Best respect always, Iain ...

Hello Merle, Thank you kindly for taking the time to welcoming me. It is a nice feeling when that happens. I can understand what you are saying that here is probably the most likely spot that I will learn the most about this condition that we have. This is a first for me so I am sort of drumming up the nerve to ask my questions. I am still unsure of the procedure on how to do that but I am sure that I will find out once I read some more. It is great also to hear from someone in my age group. Although I am not discriminating about age groups. In the world out there I have found that the younger ones were the ones that I could relate to the best, due to my child-like mentality, I think.
So thats coming up for three years now that you have been with WP. The way I see that is there must be something substantial
that you are getting from this or you would have split already. Anyhow Merle many thanks once again for spending the time to say welcome home. That really cool!!
Ps. I thought that America was absolutely top notch fantastic in the 60s and 70s. The era had made a big positive impression to my life. Helped me loads, Stay cool Merle and I hope that we chat again sometime, best respect always, Iain...

Both Richie and me hang out at a place called the Dino Ex Cafe here on WP for Aspies over 40. It used to be a real happening place, but more and more over 40's kept finding WP and now, we are mainstreamed into the general population.

but it is a nice thread to go on. here is the link: http://www.wrongplanet.net/posts32122-start17070.html

there are a couple years postings from older (hence the Dino-saur  reference)Aspies and the thread is also ongoing. Perhaps identification and wisdom will be yours?

Merle
