I've been using IRC for many years now, however, I've not used it nearly as much as I've been using it these past few weeks. The reason why I've been using it so much is because I've been running my own IRC channel, I've learned many useful IRC commands and I've met many new friends from chatting. At this point, I pretty much keep X-Chat (an IRC client) kept idle at all times. I have become hooked on IRC. :)

So.... does anyone here find IRC to be enjoyable?

Former IRC enthusiast. I am glad I got out of that. Great waste of time, IMnoHO

I enjoy IRC in my spare time (which I have a lot of right now), I also run my own IRC network for people on the Autism spectrum (that includes those with AS) to chat in safety and run their own channels, anyone from WP is more than welcome to use it, give me a PM for details, if I give a link on here that might be seen as advertising and I don't want to anger the mods

Between school and personal projects I don't have much time to put into IRC. However, I have an IRC server set up for a social networking website for aspies I'm creating and I hope to make IRC a major part of this project. In other words, I appreciate IRC and really like the idea of it compared to a lot of proprietary chat protocols. Since my IRC server is fully functional now I probably will just let people connect to it and chat so I can get a crowd prepared for when I finish the website. I don't want to make a big deal about it here, so just PM me if you're interested in hearing more about this project.

I'm hooked on IRC. I have op capabilities on 9 different freenode channels, some of which are my own, and I'm a regular in #wrongplanet on freenode.

((((hugs))))

You mean active IRC channels still exist? I used to hang out on some channels in like 2002 or 2003, but wasn't very active.

I am a regular IRC user. I almost always have a couple of channels open at least. I can normally be found on SynIRC and Tech-Touch. I only tend to visit Freenode occaisionally now.

I've been using IRC for about 2+ years. My dad blocked it through our firewall and I'd like to know how to circumvent that so I can get back on.

Get a different dad?

If it's his network, it's his rules. When I was a kid, I couldn't wait to move out so I was no longer under my parents rules. But now I have my own house and I have to live with the parent-like rules the government sticks me with, instead. So despair, because you'll never get out of having someone else making your rules.

But at least where my home network is involved, I'm the boss of that.

Mibbit is your friend

http://www.mibbit.com

some networks however (freenode being the recent due to a script kiddie that has tried to wipe out my connection twice) don't allow mibbit

personally I have no problems with mibbit and allow people to connect from it on my own IRC network

CGI:IRC is another option, though again this can sometimes be disallowed by some IRC networks, but not mine as again I have no issue with it
