I'm not like most textbook aspies in the sense that i like food A LOT. i like trying new foods (unlike most aspies), and my favorite foods are all the bad foods like chocolate, cakes, cookies, cinnabons. my weakness is sugar. i love sugar. it's hard as hell for me to try and eat fruit instead of pop tarts and cakes and stuff.

i eat three normal sized meals, i try to incorporate vegetables into my diet, and i don't eat a lot of red meat. my problem is carbs and sugar.

i'm 5'6" and i weigh about 160. but my body fat percentage is close but not quite at the unhealthy level yet (30%).

i'm just wondering if there are any other aspies out there who aren't borderline anorexic? am i the only aspie who likes food?

I am slightly overweight (about 6', 190 lbs), and I am a foodaholic. I like to go out to eat a lot.

What do you mean? Fruit has a lot of sugar. I would suggest eating only the appropriate portion sizes if you're going to eat lots of cake, cookies, etc. Same with fruit even.

A weighty subject topic

I like food, but I am not at risk of obesity, due to my bone structure. However, women of my age do tend to gain weight as metabolism changes. This was never a problem when younger.

There are those who must always be careful of weight gain, due to problems concerning diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and even some cancers that may develop due to unhealthy diet choices. People who eat healthful foods and are physically active have fewer problems with their health. Certain ethnic groups are also susceptible to health risks due to diet.

Fad diets do not work. There was a thread here in this forum yesterday that mentioned neurological problems that had to be considered due to inherent food cravings that apparently change neural pathways in the brain. I will find it and post it here.

Best of luck, Boomshika. :)

I'm a picky eatter, not into most new foods.
But.
I like what I do eat. Maybe too much. And it's also most of the bad stuff.

And yeah, I'm a bit overweight.

230lbs at 5'10". I love food. Especially chicken wings, pizza, bacon and fried chicken. Oh yeah, and BBQ.

Yes, you are the only fat aspie.

Oops, I mean "no".

But it does seem like a lot of aspie men look like overgrown children: skinny, lack of muscles, head too big for body. at least that's my anecdotal experience.

No..Aspies come in all shapes and sizes..I would not concider myself fat with those proportions..I am 5'2" and struggle to stay at 150, though the most I have weighed was close to 170..not too terribly long ago.

When I was little, I was fixated on food..and sorta drowned my sorrows in it and became an obese child...dyspraxia made it hard for me to exercise...and so did the extra weight...I was very much into sequestering myself in little hiding places with a pile of books and a whole bag of cookies...also, we were poor, so there was a lot of anxiety over food and I tended to binge and/or hoard whenever I could.

When I was very little though I was very skinny, and prone to forget to eat until my blood sugar dropped way low....my food problems showed up when i got a bit older and my childhood developmental problems were at their peak.

Being an obese child makes it a bit harder to not be a fat adult. The only way I was able to break the spell was by becoming a vegetarian in my early teens.
I am also the product of an overweight dad..who also fixates on food and has impulse control issues regarding food...and an ASish mom who in the past was anorexic...
So I am medium-sized, but on the heavy side.

I don't like processed sugary stuff anymore...I hate sodas and most sweets except in extreme moderation. My weakness is cheese..

yeah i hoard food in my room too, which is usually processed stuff full of carbs that won't go bad too soon (like pop tarts). my family is going thru hard times, plus i'm not working right now.

i would like to lose about 10 lbs but i've always been (even when i was thinner) and will always be heavier than i look. that BMI chart does not do me justice. i guess i have a lot of muscle mass or something.

I wish you were the only overweight aspie, because then that would mean I wasn't!

I've struggled with my weight my whole life. I was overweight as far back as I remember, like in the fourth and fifth grades (nobody really notices their weight much before that, I don't think). I weighed like 170-180 in middle school, then spontaneously lost a ton of weight one summer and was down to 135. I slowly gained it back and was up to 160 in undergrad, and topped out at 195ish last winter.

I decided to do something about it and exercised and counted calories and lost 25 pounds last spring. Then I sprained my ankle, which kind of stalled the exercise, and since I couldn't exercise I decided not to bother eating well as well. I got sick this summer with stomach problems, so I dropped another 10 pounds or so. Now I'm down to about 160, at 5'6". Hoping to lose another 15 pounds, but haven't been really serious about it lately.

As I shovel down a huge bowl of cereal drowned in full fat chocolate milk, let me just say that despite being a 5'11" 150lb male, I am fat at heart.

But in all seriousness I would be rail thin like I was for most of my life if left to my own whims. I have to force myself to eat enough to gain weight. So I guess in that sense I fit the AS male stereotype.

If you lift weights like me you can eat to your hearts desire and hardly gain weight :D

Ah, you are not alone in an appreciation of food... while I don't have the same desire for experimenting and trying new foods you do (my tastes are quirky, and affected by some food allergies), I do love certain flavors and combinations. At the same time, I've lost 93 pounds since the start of 2008 and have almost reached my initial target weight, which is well below the indications for obesity. One does not necessarily beget the other - just takes effort, preparation and application to ensure balance.
