Anyone run any emulators? I do! I have a SNES, GBA, Wonderswan, and a butt-kicking Arcade emulator! It's realllllllly easy to do once you get deep into it. A friend of mine got me turned on to it and I have been playing games on my PC since and my bro loves it too.

Emulators are a great way to get started with the retro-scene, but it's difficult to take them seriously once you're used to the real consoles/computers.

I don't think I've even looked at the emulators on my laptop for the last couple of months.

I have VisualBoy Advance and No$GBA for the handheld games (mostly for Pokemon, but I also have Advance Wars). I have Project64 for N64 games. I'm currently working on Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie (two games I loved but never had). I recently found a plugin that can mimic a Transfer Pak, so once I get my Pokemon raised to the appropriate level in Crystal version, I'll be playing Pokemon Stadium 2 out the wazoo.

I am using an European arcade emulator called Kawaks. It's easier to use than that stupid MAME although a few people disagree on that. I am having trouble starting a PlayStation emulator though. Too many plugins and not enough support for them.

I like some emulators, like it's really nice being able to play Gameboy and Game Gear games on my GBA Micro, but for the most part, I would rather have the real thing.

Though I'm kind of excited about the prospect of N64 emulators on the Wii, since my N64 joystick wobbles like nobody's business, and none of my memory cards work anymore (even after putting in a fresh battery!).

I have no idea how Castlevania is supposed to work on a GameCube pad, though...total button reassignment overhaul, I guess.

ZSNES for Super Nintendo games. I had to use Snes9x to play through Super Mario RPG because it froze in ZSNES when I equipped items to Mallow! I guess even ZSNES hates that guy!

Fusion for Sega Genesis, SegaCD, 32X, whatever system it emulates.

MAME for arcade games.

DOSBox for obvious reasons. Carmageddon lags badly in several parts when running in low res, and sometimes, I like to play Stunts for some reason.

I used to play Turbografx 16, ColecoVision, NES, Game Boy, etc. emulators, but I don't really anymore.

Kega Fusion is a magnificent emulator. It's incredibly easy to use and emulates the SG1000, Master System, Game Gear, Mega Drive/Genesis, Mega CD and 32X. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who loves the Sega consoles.

The quality of emulation for Atari is also very good. Stella (Atari 2600) and the Steem Engine (Atari ST) are well worth a look.

Emulators are the best!! If there's a game I want to play I can just download the ROM for it, as well as some games that have never reached the shores of Australia, such as Earthbound and some Final Fantasy games.
It also defeats the need for me to download Virtual Console games. I think that if I ever download another VC game it will be a multiplayer game so I can share it with friends.

I think on the legal side of things, it's OK to have an emulator if you have the actual console, and ok if you own the actual game. If you don't have the console or game, then well... I won't say any more.

I haven't used an emu for a while though

I got Carmageddon to run in XP just fine without DOSBox, just use VDMSound. Seemed to be running at a smooth 60 FPS in 640x480 mode, so I hacked the config files and boosted the heck out of the draw distance. Doesn't run at 60 FPS anymore after that, but it's still really smooth, and I think the tradeoff is well worth it.

I couldn't get my High Octane version to run in VDMSound though, so I had to *cough cough* borrow *ehem* the full version of the game from the Internet ;)

It's perfectly legal to have an emulator even if you don't own the console. However, technically, it's only legal to have ROMs if you back them up yourself from the carts/discs that you own.

...but who really cares?

Emulators are freely available under public licence. ROMs are what they call "abandonware" i.e. the software houses that produced the games either no longer exist or are too interested in their current products to care about old games that have no commercial value.

Eh, I run Windows 7 here. VDMSound is obviously not going to work. Oh well...

Actually, I stand corrected. I ended up playing Carmageddon a bit yesterday, and I was running the Windows executable, not the DOS one through VDMSound. Every once in a while, though, it would minimize back to the desktop, or sometimes it would even crash...not sure if I need to change the affinity or what, I didn't have those problems last time I played it.

Windows 7 won't run VDMSound? Dang...gives me more of a reason to avoid it =/

I'll re-phrase that.

The emulator is held under whatever license it was granted and it will have one. Even if it's GNU. The problem is the legality of the software that was used on the original console. That's where the problems can lie. But it's legal if you own the console.

It seems as though some companies are specialising is emulating actual games from by-gone days. There are small hand controllers that contain loads of games to play on the TV. Small but addictive games. Emulators are the way forward.

I do believe that the old companies that made the original games have gone bust and wouldn't care, but I am only saying

Well, I have two versions of Gens Plus, Kega Fusion, and two versions of Gens.

You could say that I pretty much stick with Genesis emulators.
