Which IDE do you use, and why?

I personally use on my Windows boot a combination of vs05, vs08, and the vs10 beta. For my linux boot I use Netbeans mostly. I was wondering which IDEs most of us were using and why.

I use VS because of the wealth of addons, and netbeans because it's the best IDE I can find for linux.

So, what is it you can't do with Eclipse? I've recently discovered that I can't trace jpa annotated stuff in Glassfish with Eclipse, which is one reason for preferring Netbeans over it - or one reason for being suspicious about Glassfish, if you have that option.

But, past that...

My main line of research at the moment, though, is XQuery which I can best work out with a text editor (jEdit's my favourite) and the eXist-db sandbox. I don't know what Netbeans offers for XQuery, but I'd guess not much.

As for now, all the code I wrote I wrote in Emacs. Though I'm still learning programming, so I don't know how it'll go...

I use Visual Fortran 98 for doing numerical calculations and finite element programming.

Out of curiosity, if I were to get MATLAB, would I be able to export say, flight modeling data from the aerospace plugins to a xml or c++ files?

Ya I had a few good seconds thinking that one up.

Yeah, should be possible, see: Exporting to XML Documents :: Exporting Data(MATLAB®) and Invoke MATLAB Compiler - MATLAB

I rather not use JRE for a glorified editor.

I have used several IDE, but I'm never completely satisfied.

SciTE is what I use most. It works as expected.

I have no idea, I don't know Octave, even never heard of it, and why would I try to find out,

I just use VS2008 and occasionally notepad nowadays. Has anyone trying using VS2008 for html? It is a pain in the rear. Because my locale is British it insists on wrapping every little bit of text or edit with <span lang="en-gb">text</span> which makes the design window unusable for entering text, so all text entry / changes have to be done in the source view window. Even a single letter spelling correction in the middle of a word triggers it to wrap that silly span tag around the letter.

That's why I'm asking. I know there're some differences between MATLAB and Octave, so for some obscure tasks Octave may not be an option, but most of the time they are interchangeable. It always saddens me when people are forced to use non-FOSS in science, in my opinion it undermines the ethical implications of science as such.
