My boyfriend wants us to go on holiday together to far off places, explore new cities, etc.. He wants us to go to Prague together, which from what I've seen isn't too bad as a place, but it's somewhere new, where I don't have any familiar safe spaces, or connections, and I can't really be me without those things. Does that make sense? The whole idea just seems like a huge pile of stress. It was okay (ish) with my family when I was younger, because they'd deal with all those things, and I just had to cope with a new room to sleep in and no internet for a while. But as an adult, it all sounds like a nightmare for me.

So much change, and stress, and chaos, and new, unfamiliar people and places and customs. I appreciate that there are places out there that are nice, and different, and fascinating, and if I'd been born there, or lived nearby, I'd like them. But on my holidays I tend to just want to stay at Home, usually just in my room. The idea of 'getting away for a change', and that somehow being relaxing and fun, is entirely alien to me.

Does anyone else feel like that? Am I just being crotchety?

Hey, Christmas is the greatest time of year. But to enjoy it most, we have to get out of bed.

I don't feel that way, and you are not crotchety.

I'm looking forward to Christmas. It's my most favourite day of the year. Happy Birthday, Jesus! :D

Your question seems to be more about travel than the holidays. I actually feel MORE myself when travelling somewhere new, because my behavior isn't circumscribed by familiar people's expectations of me or my own mindless habits.

Home for the holidays topic

I went to Florida once, during Christmas, 33 years ago. Since then, I have be in Michigan once, and got there in a car. Mostly auto travel in Ontario. I can barely remember the last time I went to the airport all those years ago, and from what I see in TV, airports are nasty. :x

I have never been outside the US or Canada, and the former I have only visited three times in my life. :P

Prague is beautiful, I had the good fortune to go there three years ago. I was there in May though, I'm sure it would be quite cold this time of year. I do know what you mean about wanting to just relax instead of dealing with travel stresses. It can be a pain.

I tend to feel quite uncomfortable about going on holiday. I was a lot more enthusiastic when I was younger but even then I usually preferred places I'd been to before, and was always looking for the parts of those places that the crowd hadn't noticed yet. So it's probably mainly an issue of predictability and avoiding too many unexpected changes to my routine. These days it's hard to separate out the issue of cost......it's very easy to blow several hundred pounds in a few days, and I have more important things to spend the money on. Tourists are easy targets for the ripoff merchants. I also often find the standard holiday activities just don't interest me much - buying meals at fancy restaurants, gawping at "the sights," a dip in the sea, a trip round the amusement park....some of it's OK but mostly I just get bored.

As for aeroplanes, I haven't tried one yet but I doubt if I'd like it much. Seems to me the passengers spend hours hanging about at the airport, then there's the customs people who are quite happy to screw up your journey plans while they interrogate and search you (and no compensation for wrongful detention). When you get onto the plane the pressure makes your ears pop, and you're crowded into a tiny space with no leg room (unless you travel executive class). Probably can't even look out of the window.

I'm sure there are lots of fascinating things to see and do in the wider world, but I don't think that the modern ritual holiday is the best way to do them.

I love going abroad. But I do like having everything organiseed before I go, so I know where the documents are and how we will get where.

First off, I love your choice of username! Little, Big is one of my favourite books.

And yes, sorry. I think in the UK 'holiday' and 'travelling somewhere else for relaxation/entertainment' are more synonymous than in the US. Or I've just misinterpreted things, it wouldn't be the first time. :)

In any case, going away for a while for the purpose of relaxation/entertainment/etc is what I was referring to, not just time off work. Thanks for picking up on that.
