I saw a question on Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader, which was a Geometry question, how many sides are on a cube? I can't visualize the cube in my head. I think it has something to do with my autism, which is the lack of spatial ability. Also I couldn't get one right with what's the lowest composite number added to the lowest prime number. I am terrible with math definitions, but great with solving for x. What is my problem?

It depends on the form of autism you have, and potentially which brain side you use more. Some people are spatially impaired, whereas others are unusually good with it. I am in the latter categroy. I am actually significantly better at geometry than algebra, and can easily picture complex shapes and devices in my head. I've always scored high on visual spatial tests. I also am, generally, better at writing than math. I'm left-handed, though, and I'm not sure how much, if any, that makes a difference.

I was diagnosed with high functioning autism, but many think it is actually Aspergers. Does that make a difference? And I'm far better with algebra and the procedures required to be successful in doing so. I am a very procedure-oriented person.

I suck at it too but I can picture things but I have difficulty holding that picture to see it and count each sides or put something together in my head. I have to see it out of my head.

I love geometry because I'm a very visual thinker.

Oh, and a cube has 6 sides. :P

Well, I know im not good with visuals/geometry, but i am ok with general shapes. When someone mentions a cube, i think of a dice. Since a dice is labeled 1-6, therefore a cube has 6 sides. Not sure of a general way of knowing how many sides in a 3D object, save for the latin names (hexagon = 6 sides (2D object), dodecahedron - 12 sided 3D (i think)). Just try to think of something you use everyday (or just a lot of) to compare shapes . . . bout all you can do.

It's a commonly held belief that people who are good at algebra are bad at geometry, and vice-versa. I don't know how factual that is though, it may just be a stereotype.

I'm pretty good with visualizing things in my head. I can even manipulate it around....as in turn the cube around....in my head.

I can remember a question on that Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader that said something like, "Name an largest integer between 1 and 100 where 7 is in the tens place."

I wont tell you the answer, but I said, 77 and that's wrong. I have a tendency to get caught up on a thought and I kept thinking "seven" and couldn't get it out of my head. LOL!

I'm sure everyone will get the correct answer. I'll check back.

In common belive Autistic are good at spatial while Asperger are good at logical. But the distintion usually doesn't match diagnostic criteria. The only link is that usually spatial people are picture thinker while logical people are auditory digital (verbal thinker). But for istance you can still be a "logical" thinker with verbal impairment (so you'll be classified as HFA) or a picture thinker without verbal impairment (and you'll be classified as Asperger).

I thought 77 right away too.

I also fall into the pattern-based thought described by Grandin here.

It helps to see geometry in an algebraic manner or to recognize the patterns in geometry. Still, there's no 100% way to compensate for the lack of spatial processing.

I am searching for resources for a PDD-NOS student struggling with algebra and geometry. He gets it and then a day later he completely forgets how to do the exercises. Any ideas? Please. Thank you.

I loved geometry but i was bad at algebra. Geometry part was that could keep my attention on math, without it i could have been less motivated in that object too. Also when i had to draw geometric stuff on drawing class i was better than the most, yet i failed at simple drawings, still up to today i can't draw more than stick men, stick flowers and so on.

I got 97 first time because I was visualisng it as a hundreds, tens, and units sum. In this case the 7 would be in the middle, i.e. *7* and then the question said it was less than 100, so if the 7 was in the tens column and it was less than 100, then the biggest number you could have in the hundreds column would be 9, and of course for figures lower than 100 there are only two numbers, not three, thus the answer is 97! This is what happens when you're too tired after singing in a carol service. On a rethink, I believe the correct answer is 79.

I'm a right-brained kind of guy. Geometry and I don't mix.
