CCHR Scientology front-group has ads on this site?
On the front page, under the introductory paragraph ("Wrong Planet is the web community designed for individuals..." and all that) the animated banner ad slot is displaying an ad for the 'Citizen's Commission on Human Rights', a known Scientology front group. Their mission is to expose the evils of psychiatry (scientology has a long-standing argument with psychiatrists).
Look, whether or not you like psychiatrists, Scientology is an organization that denies the existence of Autism, possibly even leading to the mistreatment of John Travolta's little boy, if you believe that he had Autism and not what they said he had. They also don't believe in any sort of psychiatric drugs (just ask tom cruise, who doesn't even believe in drugs for post-partum depression).
I can't think of any site or combination of sites that I may have visited that would cause this banner ad to appear for me - so, is Wrong Planet being sponsored by CCHR?
Is anyone else seeing these ads?
(yes, this is my first post - I'm a long-time lurker, but Scientology gets me worked up enough to post )
Wrong Planet is not sponsored by anyone, and does not directly solicit advertisers. Rather, Wrong Planet uses an advertising service, who solicit the advertisers and use computers to match ads to web pages.
(Note, I'm not an admin, I'm not speaking officially. Just a veteran board member who's familar with how the ads work.)

Mysty is right, the ads are chosen by Google, and this site has no control over them. I agree, however, that some of the displayed ads are in direct conflict with the mission of the site, and if there is any way to control them, we should find it.

Oh, that's good then. I was worried
It was a while ago, so I may have the facts wrong, but when Tim Buckley did a comic about Gold farming in online games (on his website, ctrl-alt-del) he had a similar problem with ads for gold farming coming up in his google ads box. He was able to...do...something so that they wouldn't show up any more, maybe change the account settings and ban those ads, but that was google ads. I don't know if it would work the same with whatever provides the animated ads.
If anyone knows how to avoid Scientology ads showing up, it'd be the folks at Why We Protest - the HQ for people protesting against Scientology. I think they had problems with the common use of the word 'Scientology' and related words causing ads for Scientology to appear. It's probably something similar - all the talk of psych-stuff is causing their anti-psychiatry front group to appear.
but that's about where my knowledge ends. Last time I had a website it was the days of Compuserve (took half an hour of the computer screeching to even connect!) and I don't think internet ads had even been invented yet.
eskilla,
I sent you a PM with some links to a number of old posts I made on Why We Protest regarding CCHR and autism. Since I'm new here, I can't post links for at least 5 days.
You can do a Google search to find my posts on WWP, try searching for "CCHR" plus "autism", or Google search by title:
CCHR opposes medical treatment of autism
CCHR opposed 2009 bill for autism treatment
CCHR call autism a physical handicap
CCHR, autism treatment, and "Humane Psychiatry"
Dianetics listing on Autism therapy site
As for the CCHR banner ad, I would *not* recommend clicking repeatedly on it, because that would be wrong < snicker >.
Cheers,
OTBT from Why We Protest
