Does this happen to you often? I go through manic phases (a day to a few days) when I accomplish a lot and feel invinsible and then I can go through weeks or months feeling numb of emotion.

I've had one severe bipolar episode when when I was 19 which lasted for two years and have taken herbs and supplements ever since which have helped me a lot.

I am numb almost everyday. It's a comfortable state of mind after a while.

I'm constantly numb lately.

Same here. Maybe it's just some sort of defense mechanism against emotional overload. Anyway, having read some of the Stoic philosophers, this is actually not so bad after all. To be in a state where neither pain nor joy can touch me very much is probably the most secure form of happiness.

Oh, I agree! I would much rather be numb than have constantly shifting emotions....which can be a real pain. Maybe this numbness is a form of emotional homeostasis.

I have also read the Stoics (Epictetus is helpful) but I much prefer the Epicureans and their concept of ataraxia (freedom from disturbance).

Yes, I usually feel like this when I'm very tired or sometimes it can be just an everyday feeling.

Would you care to elaborate please? I've never quite understood the difference between the Stoics and the Epicureans regarding this particular point - probably because I didn't bother to study the latter thoroughly enough.

Are you talking about what you feel or what you express? I feel a lot more than anyone would know to observe me. Emotions were like dirty underwear in my WASP-y family. The stronger the emotion, the quicker I detach.

I wish I was...I let my emotions get to me too often. I'll be numb for a period of time, then something will happen and I'll get a huge surge of adrenaline. I guess it has to do with the way I was raised. My mom was and still is extrememly emotional. My dad gets angry at everything also. I was raised around constant yelling and fighting, so now my initial reaction to almost everything is to raise my voice. (happy or upset)

I'm working on this though. I read about it online and a good way to subdue your emotions is to picture your life as a movie. Also taking long periods of introversion (done)

Sometimes I feel emotionally numb, but it's just a defense mechanism. I don't let things get to me anymore. My family always gives me grief every day, and they yell at me all the time, but I don't raise my voice in anger around anyone else.

I don't feel strong feelings quite like I used to. Last night I actually had a dream about a girl I liked. Typically this sort of dream would leave me thoroughly depressed in the morning. However after this and even after a little dwelling on the matter, I didn't feel bad at all.
I don't get feelings as strong as I used to. And I usually feel little to nothing if I'm not stressing over something.

I experience the opposite, as far as emotions are concerned. I wish that there were days that I could feel emotionally numb.

Yes. Once maybe a month ago I for a very long time had a case of Apathy that worried allot of people. I just stopped caring. I'm better now.
