They usually have a circumscribed area of interest which usually leaves no space for more age appropriate, common interests. Some examples are cars, trains, French Literature, door knobs, hinges, cappucino, meteorology, astronomy or history.

I found the above quote on http://www.aspergers.com/aspclin.htm which may explain why I tend to do so well in politics. Because of the fact I obsess on the area may be benificial, especially if I pursue a career in my obsession. And the fact of the obsession being your job, you may be able to gain incredible benefits and raise to top ranks in businesses which focus heavily on such obsession.

For those of you who thought Aspergers was bad, think again, it may annoy some, but as long as we get to find a positive use for the obsession, we should stick to what we obsess about and obsess away.

Example - I obsess about politics
Result - I kick the pants off most other people in debate, even when they are prepared and I am not.
Result of the Result - I will make an excellent politician.

Any other thoughts about this?

I myself love politics. i follow politics on every planet on Earth albeit only on the constituency level in the US, UK and Canada.

I believe our new PM, Stephen Harper, is an Aspie :-)

I'm glad to find a fell politics-loving Aspie!

Could work out just that way.

I would recommend you keep an open mind, though. People who follow and understand politics well are valuable in many regards including:

Political News Analyst (TV and Print)
Speech writer
Constitutional Lawyer
Political Publicist
Political Strategist
Political Science Professor
Etc.

The job of a politician deals with power, and power attracts some of the slimiest people you can imagine, psychopaths, et. al. They don't necessarily understand the issues very well. They just know how to manipulate power and people--and there is a lot to know, and a talent to weilding power. If you don't have that particular talent, your knowledge and skills in debate won't avail you at all. You'll get run over, because these guys will do things so slimy you didn't even see them coming.

But either way, stick with what you love. Follow that, and I'm sure you'll do very well.

That is why I would be asking them to explain issues, and I would be willing to shoot down thier proposals, etc. I can only hope we can get better on our choice of politicians though. Hopefully me being one will help give a better choice to others, and I could do what I love.

I agree; I'm already channelling my own obsessions onto a career path that will allow me to excel with them. Since they are currently animals (especailly dogs), diseases, and Latin (as well as ancient cultures and mythology), I'm thinking vet.

Additionally, just being a keen observer of politics and great at understanding them, does not mean you'll make a great politician. There's a lot of other skills you need that Aspergers means you lack. Social skills, successful lying, manipulation etc.

Awww, John Major, right? Nope, on second thought, he couldn't be, he didn't seem to be interested in anything at all. :)

Yes. Or you could specialize in the study of the diseases that afflicted the mythological dogs of the Romans. :D

I believe it was the recently deceased Sir Edward Heath, byname Ted Heath.

He was single all his life and was very aloof. Very keen intellect.

Does such a person really exist? Especially in politics!

He's not an Aspie, he's an idiot that just wants to suck up to Bush.

He's not an Aspie, he's an idiot that just wants to suck up to Bush. He would leave Atlantic Canada with nothing so that Western Canada and Ontario/Quebec would benefit. Of course, I happened to end up in a relationship with his near look-a-like. And I like politics but not impressed with them right now.
