People do die every day and that doesn't depend on anyone's opinion!

But they don't generally die as a whole cross-section of society, in large numbers, at the same time, and their death is not generally accompanied by massive damage™ to infrastructure, disease, and all the other nasty stuff that happens in the aftermath of a disaster. That's why this is news, and why it's a bad thing beyond the ordinary.
That said, I'm seriously conflicted as to the ethics of charity donation to disaster relief efforts, given that the recipients usually seem to be the sort of people who'd want to burn me at the stake.
