One weird thing I've always done since I was a kid is narrate everything I'm doing in my head as if it was an (incredibly boring) story. For example I might be getting out of my car thinking "she locked the car and twirled the keys around her finger, shoving them in her bag as she quickly crossed the road. She glanced at the time and let out a frustrated hiss, dodging around people as she hurried through the shopping centre." I don't know if this has anything to do with AS, I've never heard of it. Does anyone else do anything like this?

I do that a lot too. I like to narrate other people's lives as well. I also create little back stories for every other person i see.

"The woman quickly turned her head as she crossed the street. She was smiling at someone she had just departed from. Her eyes glistened and her skirt swayed playfully like the look she was giving the man. An artsy type possibly wishing to find another to spend a gleeful life."

That one was earlier.

I've done this all my life.

Gets particularly interesting, not mention HIGH energy, when I carry on both sides of a long, heated argument with a person not present. Over the past, oh, thirty years or so, I've learned how to control this trait enough to avoid spouting off in public. I used to be that guy you saw pacing down the street talking loudly to no one there.

Though, in today's world, Bluetooth makes that easier to get away with, doesn't it?

I do this all the time, I always talk through what I've just done like I'm describing it to someone.

The narrator in my head analyzes how people react to my individuality. The story of an innocent Kinks fan in a world of raunchy Beatles fans. It's funny how most of the middle aged people step aside. "We like The Beatles...we're scared of that...is it a boy, or a girl".

There is a narrator in my head who speaks in the first person and uses the present tense. For example, it will say,
"I am opening the door", or,
"I am watching The Twisted Whiskers Show".
I am actually watching The Twisted Whiskers Show now.

Yeah I do that, and also think about it being done on a film about me... Of course, though, no one would ever watch that :P

I can't believe this post!! I've done this very same thing since I was a little kid, and I was just wondering the other day whether there was anyone else who did this. I'm glad (but very surprised!) that there are others who do!

I've done it since I was a kid, too. I really related to JD from "Scrubs" in this way. :)

A lot of us aspies are very influenced by the various forms of media- things like television, books, movies. You know, stories with narrative structures. So I think it's natural that we tend to frame our own lives similarly.

Same here.
Internal monologue, also known as inner voice, internal speech, or verbal stream of consciousness is thinking in words. I think most people do it, maybe apies do it more because we spend a bit of time in our head.

My son said to me that his inner voice is female. I laughed and said "does she sound sexy" :)
He has been diagnosed with aspergers and schizophrenia.

There is an add that plays on TV in New Zealand about your inner voice with the famous catch-phrase.
"I've been internalizing a really complicated situation in my head".

I might do it if I am focused on what others might see when they look at me.
Otherwise, I am more inclined to have long and detailed conversations with people in my head. Sometimes the same conversation, more or less, over and over. More than once I got really mad at my husband because of a conversation I had in my head with him which he didn't even know about. But I got mad because I knew that if I had that conversation with him, he really WOULD HAVE said those things. I just know it! ....the jerk....

That's not unreasonable, is it??

I consciously ensure my "internal monologue" remains internal - otherwise things would probably become awkward very rapidly. I visualize some people as animals based on their facial features, behavior/personality and physical attributes and characteristics. One person looks like a ferret (and acts like one too), while my Team Leader looks and acts like a turtle. Within my mind I say "the turtle is making his way to the centering machine" or "(name), with the gait of a crippled ogre, lumbers clumsily along the numerous gangways, reminiscent of a warden in Alcatraz... I wonder what he'd look like dressed in fantasy attire..." Then a cacophony of random thoughts emerges and consumes my mind, like an impending tidal wave towering over a child standing along the shore.

I've been learning to write, both fiction and non-fiction. This quality is VERY helpful!!

I have always done this, and mostly keep it inside my head. But sometimes I'll be around the house and verballizing it...and it drives my wife nuts. Also, I will make up little songs about the odd people we see when I drive my daughter to school. She thinks it's funny the way I can create some strange story and song about the random person we see. It's usually very bizarre and random story lines.

Never thought about it being a brain-wiring issue possibly...maybe it is...cool!!
