I am not suicidal but I sometimes cut my hand with a knife. I don’t ever do things like slitting my wrist I just cut my hand. I don’t know why. Does anyone have any advice?

I used to do that...

It passes eventually... I'm better now...

Cutting is like communism... it's a non-workable solution to a non-targetted problem...

I use a craft knife to pick at my fingers when i'm bored or anxious. It's more of a habit than anything.

actual depressive self mutilation only happened a few times, i picked at my arms, hoping someone would notice or care, when no-one did, I stopped doing it. Really a cry for help more than anything.

I've cut myself in the past. It doesn't solve anything and the scars suck.
If I'm in a self harming mood I'll-
Play some heavy metal or beetoven and jump up and down.
Slap myself or snap a rubber band against my arm.
It's better than cutting, anyway... :|

A tip I heard somewhere: use a big red marker instead of a knife. Don't know if it works, never been in that situation; but you can always try.

Self-mutilation is a perfectly rational adjustment for living in an irrational world... I guess...

When I was younger I used to cut myself with a razor blade and burn myself with cigarettes - now I tend to get tattoos (much more expensive, but at least you are left with something cool . . .)
I also scratch my shins a lot - I think that is a combination of self mutilation and also a side effect from one of my meds . . .

I've been cutting , on and off , for more than 17 years now. I've gone weeks or even years without doing it but I don't think I'm completely self-injury free yet.......
I've learned to do it in ways and in places where it won't show when I'm wearing normal clothing. I DON'T want to do it anymore but it crops up when I'm really really stressed. It's hard for me to use a physical outlet for my stress (like stomping around or pacing or going for a walk...) because my legs won't allow it - I'm disabled and I have a lot of pain and I use cane crutches (the kind with a cuff around your forearm) to walk. Self injuring is a tough thing to figure out. There is no clear answer to "why?".

I don't cut... persay. It's odd that I do like cutting myself, the sight of blood and all, but the worry of infection is what stops me not any kind of embarassment at the act itself. It's interesting seeing what happens when the skin parts, the whole process as the body begins to heal even as it is breached is fascinating.

But... the slow burning pain, the ache, swelling and redness of infection is no fun. :p Neither is putting peroxide on it to kill the bacteria invading the body. Even damaged tissue itself aches somewhat, and there is that nasty tendancy to form scars. Scars are no fun.

So yeah... sometimes I get desires to cut myself, mostly due to lack of stimulation in my life. (Nothing wakes you up more than a blade parting the upper epidermal layers!) I usually assuage it with writing, or inducing pain without breaking the skin. Like pinches and stuff, there are some places you can pinch that hurt like crazy! 8O Quite satisfying and all.

Sometimes when I'm upset I'll poke and stab instead. Like, witha safteypin or a thumbtac.
But mostly I pluck my hair out. It's an OCD called Trichotellemania, or something.

I use to cut, among other things.

For me, it was something I look at to remind myself how much I hurt, and it felt good when I was down all the time.

Yup. I cut myself for awhile when I was really angry or sad. It felt so good. I cut my arms and sometimes my legs. Now I've stopped that. But now days when I'm angry I hurt my knees. You know, I like bounce them against the floor. It hurts like hell
