Do you get annoyed when people pronounce words differently?

I often get annoyed by people pronouncing words differently than I do. It doesn't bother me as much if they have a noticeably different accent than me, but if they don't it is like fingernails on a chalkboard. This happens even when I know that their pronunciation is correct and mine is wrong. If I know that their pronunciation is wrong they sound stupid; if I know mine is wrong they sound pedantic and snobbish.

I know it's irrational so I never tell anyone about it. I haven't been in therapy for awhile - just couldn't make myself keep going - but if and when I do go back, I know this is something I need to work on.

Sometimes I get annoyed about that. Being older, I don't say anything about it. As a kid that annoyed me and I'd correct them. That's the best way to lose any friends quickly.

The worst is on the radio. There's a flight school in Corvallis with mostly Japaneese students. Their english isn't the best-especially with their accents-and I can never understand what they say. Being in a helicopter, I stay out of the traffic pattern and look around a whole lot.

It's just one of those annoyances of life.

When someone mispronounces a word, try to say it correctly in a low volume. You can correct, and if they hear it, great. If not, great.

This is one of my pet hates. When news readers pronounce Barcelona as Barthelona or Valencia as Valenthia but they never pronounce Paris as Paree or Amsterdam as Omsterdom but pronounce Newcastle as Newcarstle and Bath as Barth. It sounds like a snobish lack of education to me. They say Valenthia to make themselves sound world wise but then say London when by their own rules they should be saying Landen. Pricks.

I have an English teacher who pronounces "Sartre" different then I do. and we are in a bit of a "brawl". Haha.

As I said I know I pronounce some words wrong (or at least in a non-standard way), so if I went around correcting others I'd be opening myself up to people coming down hard on me. I could change my pronunciations but that's not easy to do consistently when you've been pronouncing words a certain way for many years. Anyway, I also corrected people as a young child and like you said it's a way to lose friends.

It doesn't bother me enough that I feel like I need to do anything about it, other than maybe change my own feelings if possible. Mostly, I just posted it here to vent.

Yes, that's not what I had in mind when I made the original post but that is certainly a subcategory of this. Translating place names into the native language of their inhabitants while speaking in English is kind of stupid, especially when they only translate certain ones. Sometimes they go as far as changing the entire word as in calling Turin "Torino." Other times they don't make any changes as in the examples you pointed out or as in the case of never calling Rome "Roma." Speakers of other languages translate our place names so why shouldn't we translate theirs? I wonder how they draw the line to determine which to translate and which not to. It seems completely random to me.

Just a couple words, lol! The worst one, every time I hear somebody say the word "ask" and it comes out as "aks" (axe?) I cringe.

"Lie-Berry" for Library just takes the cake.

That doesn't annoy me, because I do speak with an accent.

Once in school I had an argument with another kid about this. XD;; He was SURE there was no R in the middle of library. At the time I thought he was being stupid on purpose, but I guess he really must not have known.
After all, this is the same kid who didn't know what a dandelion was. o__o

I never noticed the "r" in library before when I was at school. I was never the best speller back then anyway.

As for me I hate Australian slang. I hate how people shorten words and add an "o" on the end of almost everything. And "youse"? What the hell is "youse?"
Worst for me is "I seen" instead of "I saw".

This sometimes annoys me but I don't correct people...anymore.
Apparently people used to get annoyed when I corrected them because it made me sound arrogant, like I thought I knew more than they did.

I've been corrected, quite a few times. It only made me want to keep my accent.

This is quite odd, because just before I read this post I complained to my roommate that an employee at work pronounced the word "pecan" in a way that drives me insane. She said "pee-can" whereas I've always known it as "peh-cahn." Granted, she has a southern accent, but the third person present (I actually wasn't part of the conversation) echoed her pronunciation, and his speech wouldn't indicate that as his natural pronunciation. So now I'm doubly annoyed by their speech, and his apparent mirroring of her pronunciation. I know not to correct anymore, though it is hard, but to go so far as to change one's own speech to match someone else seems ridiculous.

Yes, obviously, it drives me insane.
