I can't get work done while listening to music. I can't seem to concentrate on my homework or reading stuff. Some people say that they need music to get things done but I need complete silence to get things done. Anyone else like this?

I listen to music while doing most things, but I CANT listen to music and read a book at the same time, my brain just wont let me do it. I cant have the TV on or any noise at all while trying to read. When I go to Barns & Noble, I take ear plugs with me. I think this is normal, and probably why you need to be quiet while at a library. Never did understand why B&N plays music in there book stores

Me. I can't listen to music while doing something else. When I do something, I must focus on it, and give it my full attention.

Because the stores purpose is to turn a profit, and people mindlessly buy things when listening to pleasant music instead of actually reading some of them and deciding not to.
That and most people can read with some backround noise.

It depends. If I'm doing something I need to put lots of thought into, like maths work or learning how to program, I need silence. But if I'm writing or if I'm reading, music is fine. In fact, when I'm writing poetry and stuff, it helps a lot.

I can't listen to music and do anything that requires some measure of concentration (reading, writing, meditating). It's either one or the other. 8O

I find that music actually helps me work.

Music helps me to work, but I can't read with large amounts of background noise.

I had this problem for many years, until I discovered that I it was the words in the music that were distracting me. How you ever tried listening to music without words?

If classical is your thing than great, you're done. Much to choose from. If not, the search may be on.

I listened to Medeski Martin, and Wood all through college to get my work done. MMW is a progressive Jazz band. Much of the songtrack of Get Shorty is their work. Bubblehouse is probably their most recognizable mainstream song.

If the music has singing in it, then no as I tend to sing along or bop around, an obvious distraction from my work. However, if it's chilled music or classical music with no singing in it, then I can study pretty well with music on.

I work at a radio station. But I always turn the speakers all the way down, because the constant talking with music breaks in the background drives me to distraction. Some of my day is spent creating sound, and I can't do it with other sound playing in the next room.

If there is music, I can't do anything else. I can't even do other things if someone is talking. I was once driving, and my husband turned on the radio and at the same time, the sat nav machine issued an instruction. I went around that traffic island about 5 times like a robot until everything got switched off.
