Do you go to family gatherings just for the food?

I realized that in the past, I looked forward to family gatherings mostly because of the food. I don't really have much conversations with my cousins and uncle and aunt. I will try to have conversations with them next time but then if I don't think of the food, there's not much to look forward to.

When I went to family gatherings like this past Thanksgiving and Christmas party I just stood around until it was time to eat. I talked a little bit but not much. :-)

Our family has never had a gathering.

Depends on the food and the family being gathered. If the family is stress waiting to happen (and many of them are), but the food's good, I'll eat by myself. If the food's not so good, Arby's is open 24/7.

Absolutely. But I also like socializing with my family.

I didn't know they were open 24 hours.

Why do you think they put out all that food? It'd be a small turnout if they didn't.

Actually, my grandmother is 96 now and she's made Saturday afternoon lunch for her kids, grandkids and now great-greats, for as long as I've been alive. Sometimes the noise level from all the children is a tad stressful and and the fundamentalist Christian small talk less than compelling, but its good to keep connected. Besides, once my grandma's gone, I may never get fresh cooked turnips again...

When my family had them, I used to go because I was expected to. The food's definitely a plus.

I also go, just for the food. I don't really say much, at family gatherings, unless somebody says something against my religious, or political beliefs, than I let them know where I stand, with a single sentence, such as, "I'm a proud Christian." and than I shut my mouth and keep it at that.

I usually talk about interesting things that have happened, or that I read about.

Ultimately yes, but here's how it happened.

My cousins were all either too much older than me or too much younger. My girl cousins were older save one my age, but I had nothing in common with her. All my boy cousins were way too young and while I was okay playing with their toys, there was still that age gap to deal with.

In the end, I found myself isolated and alone at family gatherings. Very awkward. Food/meals was the only time I felt I participated in anything. It's part of why I turned to food for emotional needs.

Now, since I have no desire to visit family or spend time with them, it's going over for the "holiday dinner" that basically makes me come over, even though I've done much to get over my "eating for emotional needs" issue.

Yep. The food usually isn't all that spectacular, but it's decent and it's free. I usually won't turn down a free meal.
