I was wondering who decides what the IEP classification is?. Do the parents have a final say or does the school district have a right to change the classification without our permission?

I don't think anything can happen without your signature on the paperwork. I guess you could say the school is making a recommendation and you are agreeing to it.

Parents always have the final say UNLESS the school district objects so strongly that they challenge the parent in an administrative hearing. Parents have huge rights. You also have the right to an independent evaluation at the district's expense. Get a copy of your rights (Procedural Safeguards) and read them word for word.

The IEP team chooses the classification and that includes the parents.
Generally, the Autism classification will qualify for the most services and the only reason to choose something else is if the school placement requires a different classification.
