Was just noting the milestone - with all the melodrama, I thought it important to remember the positives associated with our community.

Hey, the fact that we made it this far without either destroying ourselves through infighting or being shut down by the government means that we're doing pretty well. Rongepuraneju banzai! Here's to 66k members!

its Japanese for "Long live wrongplanet". "Banzai" means "long life" and "rongepuraneju" is how you would spell Wrongplanet in the kana syllabary. It's the equivalent of spelling the pronounciation of Wrongplanet in kana and then romanizing the whole thing.

That's really fun to say, but I think I'm missing the accent pattern in the first word.

Uhh, two things. One, I would spell 'Wrong Planet' in katakana as 'rongu puranetto' (and Google translate, at least with the spelling of 'planet', seems to vindicate this). And second, I find it highly ironic that one would scream out 'long life' when performing a suicidal attack.

Well maybe the kamikazes were referring to their country, as in "NIPPON BANZAI!!"

But I do agree that I screwed up the spelling of Wrong planet, though I was close.

I learned a little Japanese at school, and although reading katakana was the only thing to really stick, I have read enough sentences with katakana in them to understand them. It's just a bit of a WTF moment when I see them in English romaji.

I was browsing alphabetically through the member list not long ago, trying to find out who "HCTR" might be. (Yes, it's true I have no life!) I thought this person might be "HardCoreSomethingSomething." It turns out there is a "HArdcoreraver247," and wouldn't it be cool to hear from them a little more frequently? :) It wasn't the same person I was looking for, though.

Eventually I figured out who "HCTR" is; go me! In the course of it, I browsed quite a few pages of the member list. (Yes, I do read the phone book for fun sometimes!) And I discovered some interesting facts:

There are three accounts for gnome, joined Dec 16, 2006.
There are two accounts for Hokiemom, joined Nov 25, 2008.
There are five accounts for jls, joined Dec 30, 2006.
There are three accounts for Jodie, joined Nov 6, 2006.
There are six 8O accounts for kmgoodwin, joined Dec 11, 2006.

None of these nineteen members has contributed any post that I could see. No big deal; not everyone who joins and lurks on a forum ends up becoming a total Chatty McPostalot like your humble servant here. However, this suggests to me that... (looks over to the left-hand side of the page) 33,043... (looks again) 33,044 members might be just a teensy bit of an overestimate?

Given that four out of the five above-listed names signed on around the same time period (Nov-Dec 2006), I'm thinking "glitch" and not "vitamins."

.....

I was referring to an internet meme, itself referring to a badly dubbed scene from Dragonball Z. After a quick search on YouTube, I found the original scene (rather than all the videos made of the meme itself).

Oh wow, 33,000 members, yet the most that ever gets online at the same time is 600-700. Does that not look suspicious to anyone here? Maybe there's a lot of accounts that got banned and sock puppets that are being counted as members?

I don't think Wrong Planet has even half of the number of active members it claims to have. So this little "whoop-dee-doo" is just a crock of bull.

Speaking as a sock puppet who joined here before most of you, I remember when we ticked 1000. Just like Facebook, the honus is to keep accounts open in case people return. Some may be banned, but I know people who have left for various reasons over the years. I'm back after 3 years and I'm glad my account wasn't deleted.
