Does anyone ever have a problem when shopping for clothes because of having asperger's?

My therapist said I won't be able to pull off certain styles because of the way I hold my body.
Has anyone here ever had that same problem? If so, are there ways to fix it?

Before I knew about my AS I would melt down in clothing stores and never want to go to another one, but then my personal grooming was shocking so I knew I had to do something about it. By happen stance I went to a nearby shop, a chain clothing store. I chose several things in three different sizes and took them to the fitting room. I tried them all on and decided on a size that worked for me. The chain has all sorts of styles, but the sizing is from size 6 to size 30. Now that I know my size, I do all my shopping online and they ship it to the store free of charge, so when I get the email they are there, I just go down and pick up my package. No fuss, no hours in the stores, no bright lights and noise and having to try on stuff with other people everywhere. If something doesn't fit, then I can return it back to the store for credit for my next purchase.

and if you want to wear a certain style, just hold your body differently while wearing it. You are not a mannequin!

I think what your therapist told you about not being able to wear certain styles differently is BS, to be quite honest. You should pick out clothes that you are comfortable wearing first, and that are stylish second. Just wear whatever you're comfortable wearing.

I haven't worked out what sort of clothes (if any) would actually suit me beyond the standard jeans and oversized jumper.

I still have problems with actually shopping too. Most of my clothes I've had for a long time, and a good number of them are second hand from my family. On a few occasions I've gone to charity shops when I needed things because if I got freaked out I could look at the books, and because they're cheap and the money goes to charity I could risk not trying anything on. Recently I've discovered one shop where the changing rooms don't completely freak me out, so I think I'm making progress but also dressing increasingly like an advert for them.

It's just a matter of being comfortable and confident in what you're wearing if there's a style that makes you feel very nervous and so on you probably won't end up liking it so int he end it doesn't really matter. For instance I only wear sneakers and flip flops on my feet because anything else accentuates my clumsiness, and makes me lose my already limited confidence. I'd rather be a little less trendy and emotionally and socially be at my best chance of success.

If you like the clotches and they fit and you feel comfortable in them, they shuld be alright. Don't mind that therapist.

I wear the same clothes until people tell me I look shabby.

Then I go into a clothing store and buy two or three pairs of pants and two or three shirts.

I might buy a few pairs of black socks and some underwear.

That will hold me for another year unless my shoes get holes in them.

I only don't like shopping because of all the crowds and the way people in shopping malls seem to glare at me more, which makes me anxious and then I can't concentrate or enjoy looking at the clothes and knowing what I want. It's a vicious circle.

Well your therapist should stick to her area of expertise I doubt fasion is what that is......as for clothes shopping I prefer to do it alone and only look for a couple specific clothing items at once. I can't clothing shop with people because I get far to overwhelmed when two people are suggesting various clothing items to me and then I can't decide on anything at all without extreme frustration.

But yeah just wear what you are comfortable in and what looks good to you.

I mean if I ended up on a show like what not to wear I would probably decline their little offer because I would never give up my band t shirts, my cut off shorts or other unfashionable clothing items I enjoy wearing.

when i go shopping. i can tell on sight what i want and don't want. so i don't waste time. in an out, that's me. and i shop in the men's department because their shirts have real sleeves and no frills or flowers and real rich deep dark colors. Like purple!

Ugh, clothes. It might be a confidence issue. For me, I see clothes that I think are cool, but it just sucks because I know they wouldn't look good on me U=_=

I actually really like clothes shopping. But not shoe shopping because most shoes I try on are uncomfortable as hell.

I buy most of my clothes at Value Village, because I find most of the things that I like there. I don't like shopping in regular department stores.

I have problems shopping but it's not because of my AS. Cute clothes aren't really made for plus sizes. :(

I don't think it has to do with my AS or maybe it does because of the routine and rituals. I feel I don't have the patience to go out and do it using my time for it. So I just wear the ones I already have. I don't trust buying online because not all styles are the same so sizes vary.

I used to get my clothes at a thrift store where I worked because I see them as I'd be gathering empty hangers. Plus I loved looking in second hand stores so I'd see the clothes there and like what I see and buy it. Now I refuse to look at them because I am afraid I might end up buying and I don't want to fight the urge to resist and use willpower.
