I haven't played any Pokemon game in over 8 years, so the announcement of a remake of Gold/Silver has renewed my interest. I certainly plan on getting one of them. What are your thoughts on this?

I don't have a DS, so I don't plan on getting them.

I am replaying the original Silver, though. :P

Currently, I am amazed on how Nintendo can put out nearly the same pokemon RPG every year or so, and it has not gotten stale yet. Nintendo even milks ardent fans of the series by selling 2 (no 3) of the same game (Yellow/Red/Blue, Platinum/Diamond/Pearl, Gold/Silver/Crystal). I had not realized then when I was obsessed with Pokemon at age 11, but I do now.

I'm amazed the developers of Pokemon can get away with releasing the same game over and over for over a decade with only incremental updates. If it was computer software then the first version would've been called v1.0 and the most recent games v1.6 or so. At least now they're being honest now and actually calling this one a remake.

I liked the first Pokemon game I played (Gold). Played it to completion, had a lot of fun. But the other games are essentially exactly the same.

The remakes started with FireRed and LeafGreen, unless each generation's third game is counted. HG and SS are not the first to be called remakes.

That is because Mario 2D platformers are made less often and have bigger differences between them. And also, Nintendo did not decide to make two variants of Super Mario Bros Wii (with exclusive features for each) and did not try to market them as different games.

The underlying data structure has been completely overhauled since the days of Gold/Silver/Crystal. Since then, they have added IV's, EV's, abilities, natures, extra breeding effects (Everstones affect the chance a certain nature is bred, Flame Body ability halves hatching time, certain EV-boosting items affect inheritance of stats, etc.), tons of new Pokémon with new type combinations, new moves, and more (that's only on the competitve side of things).

Sure, the basic plot hasn't changed, but that doesn't mean the game is played anywhere near the same.

They get away with it fundamentally because it's what we pay them to do.
With all the compatibility since the third generation, each new game functions a lot like an expansion.

Oh, I just remembered when the move Disable was still common! I suppose that belongs in the memories-thread, but whatever. :)

I may get action replay for heart gold. 99x Master Ball, 99x Super Repel, all TMs, plenty of rare candies and stat boosters, if thats possible. The time it'll save alone will pay for the cost of it.

Yes, but there is a Super Mario Bros Wii and a Super Mario Bros DS that's VERY similar. I found the DS version much better.
