Would like to get away....where to??

I'll have a few weeks in June to get away....my problem is, where should I go? I do not like sitting on a beach doing absolutely nothing. I have to be moving and 'exploring'.

I really enjoy different cultures and learning how others live. I'd much rather see how the locals live than visit all the touristy areas. That said, I do enjoy museums, architecture, beautiful landscapes. I'm very much a learner and love to soak it all in.
I'm not a partier and don't enjoy getting drunk or wild.

I've considered Europe but am a bit overwhelmed by all the places to choose from (I've already been to Paris and Madrid). Perhaps someone can suggest a country (or even narrow it down to an area within that country) that is worthwhile?? I've also looked into central america (Costa Rica, Panama) though again, I'm a little overwhelmed with the logistics.

Anyone go somewhere that is a must see? Any tips or suggestions??

Fly to Cancun, rent a Jeep and take the toll road west, see Chichen Itza, spend a night in Merida, then drive southeast to the Belize border at Santa Ana?. Spend a night in Belize City, then drive west to Guatemala (Remate/Tical/Flores). Drive back east to Belize and north to Chetumal. Spend a night in Chetumal and see the Mayan museum in the morning, then take 307 north to Playa del Carmen and spend a night there.

How's that?
