I think it's Super Mario Bros for NES. It's very entertaning and is a classic. Plus, the little tune is so fun and upbeat.

Heh, this seems a bit of a "to each his own" topic given varied tastes. Personally:

Best FPS(s): Half-Life, F.E.A.R., AvP 1 &2 (just because they knew how to scare the crap out of you and did it well)
Best RTS(s): C&C 3, Starcraft, Supreme Commander, Metal Fatigue (just because it was a classic Big Mech, anime style)
Best RPG(s): NWN 1&2, Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect

Honestly, Super Mario always agitated me. Could never keep up with the game, or get the timing down.

The Legend of Zelda

Probably had some of the biggest influence on current gaming out of any game.

The Donkey Kong games for SNES! They are the best games ever. The only games I actually completed 100% when I was younger. I would really love a new Donkey Kong game to come out that isn't absolute rubbish. But until that happens, I happily play my old DK games. :D

Another game series I would have to mention for the vast amount of time I've spent playing them are the Sim games. Namely Sim City, Sim Earth, Sim Ant, and The Sims. Spent a lot of time "simulating" in my youth. Good times.

Good call, but I think the first one was just slightly better all round. Some of the individual levels in 2 are amazing fun though. Cracking games.

For me it's Battlezone and Battlezone II: Combat Commander. 8)

You can download them for free now I think, if anyone wants to give either a whirl.

The video game I've had the most fun playing ever would probably be the original Kingdom Hearts.

I don't like the first one quite as much. The gameplay was too experimental (too many zombies, bugbeasts, etc.) and the graphics were pretty dang rough.

But at least it's not Thief 3 :x

As much fun as I've had with games like Morrowind and other "Epic" games its the little perfectly done games that have stayed with me the longest.

My all time favorite, for its absolutely incomparable visual and auditory beauty as well as satisfying and well oiled gameplay would have to be Super metroid. It got me interested in sci fi and science when I was six.

The prime games sort of broke my heart, they looked like metroid games, but they just didnt "feel" like them. Like it was some sort of weird tribute series instead of a series in and of itself. The claustrophobia and eeriness were traded for a pseudo starship troopers design.

A close second would have to be Ocarina of Time, that game changed my life. In the sense it got me interested in literature and morality, which is really a misnomer because the game's writing is not whats special about it at all lol.

No game ever got me hooked like the id Software's first Quake game did. The game had this darkness to it that made it addictive and add depth to it. This game made me weary of my surroundings and taught me you really have to be alert. It was the first game ever I played death match in and maybe that makes me over idealize the game since it was my first in that sense for me. Playing on a server against 15 other players made it seem so impressive as I used to think that was a lot of people in a game. Now its really crazy when you play a game like WoW and you could see that many people in a very small area instead of being scattered across the map. Another reason I probably loved Quake was the fact it is not the longest game. It was the first game for me where I played and you could have these addons that enhance the games life or give it a breath of fresh air. Such as Team Fortress for example. I remember using a map editor called Quark making maps in that game. It was really neat to me since it felt like something I could express myself in by making a map. Quake was the first game where I played cooperatively also. I would be scared if I found out how many hours I spent playing this game online in my life.

As for Super Mario 3, this game still holds a certain charm to me. I think what sent it over the top for me was you had these extra power ups and Mario could be playing in all of these different lands with different climates. I loved playing on worlds 2, 3, and 5. Out of all the worlds though, five is probably my personal favorite. Especially when I was in the sky. I loved the way how flying as racoon Mario worked and the fact if Mario was flying, the screen would scroll up and I could find a secret pipe or whatever to enter and find something good, that felt like an accomplishment to me for finding it when I was a child. That was sort of exciting. I remember being 7 or 8 years old and I was proud how I beat that game.

Castlevania IV was pretty awesome. Maybe it is because this is where it started for me. Castlevania IV had really awesome controls. I love the first and third one for the Nintendo, but the controls in those games feel a bit stiff. In Castlevania IV, you could move your whip fluidly in all directions. I thought it was pretty cool that the water was a bit transparent. You can grapple and swing your whip from platform a to platform b. The game had a lot of bosses and stages. The stages felt bigger to me also. I also loved how Stage 5 threw me for loop and I was expecting a boss. There was none however. Super Castlevania IV is just a lot like Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti album where more is better.

Other honorable mentions go to Serious Sam: The First encounter and the The Second Encounter, Diablo 2, Doom 2, Deus Ex, Super Metroid, Double Dragon, UN Squadron, Castlevania 3, Super Double Dragon, Super Mario RPG, Super Mario 64, Streets of Rage 2, and Marble Madness. Sorry if I seemed to have been carried away with my enthusiasm.
