Feeling Awkward in Chesmistry Class...

I am having, especially, a hard time in my Chemistry class.
My lab partner, whom I was was previously acquainted with before the class, now officially thinks I am "weird" after I was mentioning to my teacher that I enjoy watching lectures on physics, and philosophy. My lab partner said "Rachel, You are so weird" - She said it in a tone that made me feel really bad, because I don't see a problem with having an interest in something.

Also, the other day the class and the teacher were casually talking about the difference between common sense and intelligence. So, I brought up a fact about Issac Newton that illustrated his lack of common sense. I got that dreaded glazed over look from my classmates and a bit from the teacher, and one student said "...OK...." and the conversation ended.

The chemistry teacher also told me that I won't ever be able to make it as an astrophysicist.

I guess I just feel very awkward in that class. Has this ever happened to you?

What kind of teacher EVER says something like "you'll never be . . . [insert potential aspiration here]"????

That's just crap -- ignore this teacher.

As far as somebody saying that you're so weird, that isn't necessarily a problem. Sometimes I say that about people, and part of it is, yes, you are weird, but part of it is "I'm sort of jealous because you're smart and you see things that I don't." So it's not necessarily a bad thing.

The situation you described with the conversation with your teacher and other classmates -- that IS a classic situation where you may have given more info than they were expecting, or your thought process didn't gel with them. That is an uncomfortable situation, for sure. We all have situations like that, and hopefully we pick up on the cues that people send, and figure out what it is that we've said that elicited those funny looks.

Once in Chemistry class I broke a glass beaker and got chewed out in front of the whole class.

I remember once I said to other kids at music class that I liked Chopin's works and they looked at me like I've just laid an egg on the table.

I think, they're just also afraid of something they don't know. If someone doesn't understand something, he'll need to cope with it, from kids in puberty, the reaction is understandable (though far from ideal), but the teacher did cross a line in my opinion.

Show them how weird you are by blowing up the chemistry lab. I'm sure there's enough materials around to fabricate enough Nitroglycerin to make some...noise.

Wait, bad Daniel. That was my fantasy in chemistry anyway.

I once to lit all the magnesium we had, I was severely puniched by school, but my classmate thought it was awesome and I had my 5 days of high school popularity.

I'm always nearly tipping things over., and once the burette nearly crashed down. I asked my classmates why they hate the boring chemistry teacher (she's not that mean, she's just boring and unable to come down to our level) and they just stared at me. They don't get why I like chemistry. Actually I suspect my chem teacher is an Aspie. I very much wonder ...
