"There 's plenty of fish in the sea"

Do u believe in that ?

As for me .....this saying is stupid and nonsense ....yea it s true that there 's a lot of ppl out there but finding a compatible person as life 's partner is not that easy like catching a fish ! ! Compatible fish are rare ..there s no plenty of them in the sea!

This saying is STUPID and a big LIE and it s used just to make loner singles to feel better!

I don't believe that it is a lie. There are billions of people on this planet, odds are that there are thousands who you would be compatible with, the issue is finding them, that doesn't change the fact they are out there. :)

I agree on that. A lot of times we give up when things aren't always in front of our face and we have to actually look for them and sometimes they aren't in places we'd expect because we often put a fairly superficial ideal in our heads of what we are looking for and it may not be what is meant for us too.

I agree to some extent. It depends on your age and where you live. Across much of Canada, the populaton is skewed depending on age. In some places and age groups, there are plenty of single women to choose from, but not a lot of single men. In other places and age groups, it is the other way around. Here are some time-adjusted stats (ratio of men to women) for Ontario and my region from 2001 (i.e. the ages shown below are correct for 2006), that show both situations existing in various age groups. Of course, the number of males decreases at a more rapid rate than women as age increases, since the median age of the male population is 1.6 years below women.

Age 5-9 Ont 1.04:1, local 1.06:1
Age 10-19 Ont 1.05:1, local 1.06:1
Age 20-24 Ont 1.05:1, local 1.06:1
Age 25-29 Ont 1.00:1, local 1.02:1
Age 30-49 Ont 0.96:1, local 0.96:1
Age 50-59 Ont 0.96:1, local 0.93:1
Age 60-69 Ont 0.96:1, local 0.93:1
Age 70-79 Ont 0:88:1, local 0.84:1
Age 80-89 Ont 0.67:1, local 0.64:1
Age 90+ Ont 0.43:1, local 0.40:1

So, in that region, if you're below age 30, you're screwed if you're male, but over 30, you're screwed if you're female.

*These numbers need tweaking

I think the saying that 'there are plenty more fish in the sea' does ring true as many people are capable of loving more than one person (I don't necessarily mean at the same time). I believe that there are people out there who you can love, it's just a matter of which one you meet first.

Here's one example. You get couples that are married for years and years and then one of them dies. In some cases, the other partner left living eventually meets and falls in love with someone else. Maybe they get married, maybe not, but my point is how does this happen if there are not plenty of fish in the sea as it were?

Yes. Figuratively, there are.

You shouldn't generalize certain situations.

Plenty of fish, yeah, but how can one settle for a sea bass when tuna are swimming around?

Could this be an early April Fools joke?

I'm tempted to use this "plenty more fish in the sea phrase" because it's clichéd, and used often enough. And clichéd it certainly is.

Like Veresae said, there are all sorts of fish in the sea. It's not just "FISH", there are all sorts of them. And we like certain sorts of fish. Certain types of fish are more palatable to our taste buds than others.

So when it comes to the opposite sex, it's not as if there is a big huge pool where everyone is available. Some are going to be taken, some are going to be different ages, some are just not going to be partner material for us, there are so many things narrowing it down. That leaves us with, what 1 in 100, or 1 in 1000 of the sea that we can 'catch'?

Would referring to any real fish be an April Fools joke?

Well, in LePetitPrince's time zone it may well be April 1st already when he posted the original topic.

ELLCIM's post, with some statistics from Canada, reminded me of something. It's not just Canada, but all countries have statistical variations like that.

Some locations have more single women than others. Some have more single women as a ratio of single men. I found stats for the UK, telling you which towns/areas have more single men/women as a ration of each other (age 25-55).

One of the towns in the UK with most single women compared to single men is Telford. 2.6 single women for every single man. The borough of Telford has a population of 150,000. So, 75,000 females approx, and something like 30,000 were single women between the above ages. You can find these sort of stats on census websites.

I have been to Telford, spent a week there on my holidays in September (and it was before I found out the above stats). Women were literally falling in my lap. I wasn't there to look for a woman, but even as a shy, socially inhibited guy with AS symptoms I would have found a girlfriend immediately with no effort, had I wanted it or lived there.

Seems like there are more 'fish' in some places than others. All countries, whether it be UK, Canada, USA (somewhere in California I forget the name of has most single women over single men) or any other country has imbalances like that due to many males/females moving in/out of a place. Small countries like Lebanon must have some sort of difference too.

There are places if you look for them, such as Telford, where I can testify that guys like us will see our chances of women increasing exponentially.

Judging from what you posted, that sounds like the truth to me.

What's Seattle like for single women compared to men?

Women there do look good, honestly. But, I don't think too many women in New York, which is where I live now, know what they are doing. They can be a little silly sometimes.

I believe it.

I mean, it's true, there are plenty of other people out there.

You have to find them though, they won't find you.
