What job are you going for/what field are you in?

If you're currently a student or at a temporary job, what career are you hoping to pursue? If you are already working, what is your job or what field do you work in?

I'm a student but it's time for me to get a general idea of what I want to do. I'll make a list 'cause that's easier for me:
1. Veterinary medicine-I worked in a vet's office several years ago and decided against being a vet after that. But I'm thinking about this career again now. I'm worried about paying for vet school. I'm interested in the Army vet corps, but don't know if I could do that because of physical limitations.
2. Neuroscience-very interested in it, don't know exactly what you would do in it as a job
3. Zoologist-same as above, plus don't know where job openings would present themselves
4. Science journalism-graduate programs are limited, not sure if I would have to relocate to work

I'm currently a student and I'm hoping to go into some form of Engineering. And I love making lists too ^^
In no specific order....

1. Tissue Engineering
2. Robotics
3. Defence Science
4. Automotive Engineering

Career -- IT Director for an 80 year old Environmental Consulting firm spanning seven states. I answer directly to the owners of the corporation and am as high as an employee can go without being an owner. I am also active with the local (city) government, albeit in a very small capacity.

Currently in between universities trying to find a good fit for my psychology studies. I hvae a job conducting presenations about what it's like to live on the spectrum and also mentor people who are on it. So my options right now are:


1) Behavioural Therapist after a post-grad certificate in Autism and Behavioural Science
2) Autism Consultant for any of the well known organizations in my area, likely follwoing post-grad studies or masters
3) Respite worker
4) Personal Counsellor after an SSW earned after graduation (friends and family have suggested this but I'm not too keen on it)
5) Speech-language pathologist, after a post grad-certificate

I'm currently a student at a community college near home working on a Liberal Arts degree. I only have one profession I want to go into and that is photography; I consider myself a nature/freelance photographer already, though I would like a little more experience working with people, doing weddings, family portraits, senior photos, stuff like that.

I'd like to work in the non-profit sector. Just that, generally, non-profit, without specification. I feel strongly about a lot of issues.

I like working at places where I actually feel I'm doing something I can be proud of, and where my co-workers actually care about what they are doing. I was an Americorps for a year with the Red Cross and it was really awesome to be around so many inspired people.
Of course, the Red Cross, as an organization, has some issues and skeletons in the closet. Many organizations do. But the people there were really awesome. And they do a lot of really good work...

Non-profit sector jobs can pay decently too. Obviously not BIG TIME money, but coming from a working-class background it all looks good to me.

After I get my useless Bachelor's Degree, I'm probably going to become an Electrician.

I'm in graduate school and I'm hoping to become a professor when I graduate. I'm in a D.A. program so by the time I finish my doctorate I will have had many hours' experience solo teaching university-level classes -- primarily Intro to U.S. Politics but the department chair had a little talk where he said he was planning to open up the options of which classes we (grad students) could teach so I may get experience teaching other classes in political science as well.

My back-up plan includes teaching high school (either full time or as a substitute teacher.) In addition to the political science, I would probably be qualified to teach history (I'm getting a sub-specialty in history), economics (I have a bachelor's in econ), Spanish (I'm working on a third bachelor's in Spanish at the same time that I'm working on my doctorate), and maybe math if a district is hard-pressed to find enough math teachers (since I had to take a lot of math to get the econ degree. And I like math.) But I really hope I don't have to teach high school. I'd far rather be a professor if I'm able.

I'm a 2-time college drop-out who drifted from job to job to job over the years before finding my niche in workplace society. Truck stops! Started in June '94 being a cook. Over the years, I've been a cook, dishwasher, porter, cashier & even spent some time on the other side of the counter as a Driver! For the last 9+ years, I've been employed by TravelCenters of America as a fuel desk cashier. The best part of the job is all the really interesting people I get to meet--and some of them are even crazier than I am! It's a running joke that being a little crazy is an asset when being a cashier @ a truck stop.

All the jobs I have had since college have related to visual arts. I have a BA in theatre and did a lot of stage work and stage management in college. After that, I was a movie projectionist which gave me time to learn to write well. 9 years of that was too much and I moved on to motion controlled video animation and did a lot of work for VH1's "Behind the Music" and A&E's Biography series. I then pursued a commercial photogrpahy career. I started out well but ran into trouble with the need to deal with strangers. Now I do computer based visual effects and motion graphics for a small ad agency and film production company.

I don't have a career so much as I have a careen. I go wildly skidding from one job to another, sometimes only slightly connected with the previous job. I get easily bored and wander off to find something more interesting to do. I guess this would drive some people crazy, but I just feel I need the freedom to completely change directions if I so choose.

Mark Twain said something to the effect of "Don't let school get in the way of a good education" I seem to live my life upon this principal. I try not to let conventional expectations get in the way of doing what is right for me.

I'm working in a grocery store as a cashier, monitoring the self-service lanes. It's most depressing and way too social. I can do some social, but 4 days in a row, even though it's only 5 hours a day, wears me out.

I have my undergraduate degree in Journalism, History, and Russian. I have my graduate degree in Economic Crime & Fraud Management. I would really like to get into a career that would enable me to help people who have been victims of identity and medical identity theft. Failing that, I am also interested in loss prevention.

I am not having any luck getting into my preferred field, however. Pretty much everyone is either seeing my MBA as "overqualified" or tells me that the degree sounds great but I need actual hands-on experience to be hireable .... but to get that experience, I need to be hired somewhere! Very aggravating catch-22. Also, we live in a small town and can't afford to relocate until we pay off several bills (which will take a few years).



Degree aside, I am a writer/artist and am working on getting published. My first book is poetry/photography/art. I'd also like to do a book of just photography that my spouse and I have taken (we have some beautiful shots!). I also want to complete several of my actual stories and publish them. My problem now is that I get so worn out - and often depressed - by my cashier job (which I need to pay bills) that I frequently lack any creative energies to write.

Several years ago someone pointed out that yes, I am an Aspie. I knew something was wrong for years, but not what. I really want to impress during my job interviews, so I talk way too much. And never get the job.

So where am I now? You've heard of us. I work for an internet superstore, I'm in a warehouse, in a company named for a certain jungle in South America.

The website sells the product, so I don't have to have any customer contact at all (so I don't talk too much and "turn off" the customer). Move the product, trace lost product, handle customer returns, fix wrong UPC codes that the manufacturer put on the products, stuff like that. I've pretty much graduated from entry-level warehouse "picking and packing" (but of course I'll do it when they need me to).

The money isn't as good as a blue-collar job (I have a Bachelor's degree in business, and have passed the Ohio Uniform CPA Exam) but a white-collar job is no good if you cannot win the job interview and get hired (also CPA firms want lots of experience, I have little -- and as I mentioned I talk too much at the interview).

Ultimately, I want to teach college level history (I'd settle for teaching Western Civ at some sleepy, little community college near a beach).

While I'm working on my master's I'd like to try bush-teaching in Alaska. It would make for a nice adventure and a better way to get some loan forgiveness than teaching in some inner-city hellhole.

That's the plan, now all I need to do is survive and implement...
